Biden vows to protect care for veterans

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Seeking to allay concern about looming cuts to defense spending, Vice President Joe Biden told veterans Saturday that their benefits will be protected, even as he derided lawmakers from both parties for much talk and little action on a deal to avert the cuts.

Biden said President Barack Obama is "committed to the core" to taking care of service members returning from war. He accused members of Congress of playing political "brinksmanship" with the nation's security.

"Look, we're going to get through this, in my view, but this is a hell of a way to do business," Biden said. "We owe our military more certainty."

Addressing the Disabled American Veterans' national convention, Biden reminded veterans that their medical care was exempted from automatic cuts due to hit military and domestic programs on Jan. 2. He also said the Obama administration has increased funding to veterans by 30 percent, and promised to end a massive backlog of disability claims by 2015.

An estimated 4,000 people are attending the convention at Bally's Hotel in Las Vegas to discuss issues such as mental health care for returning veterans and the backlog of Veterans Affairs disability claims.

Touching on a central theme of Obama's re-election campaign, Biden urged higher taxes on the rich, and said politicians should take a cue from veterans in setting tax policy.

"We can all take a page from your book ? a sense of shared sacrifice and the understanding that all of us, all of us have to do our part," Biden told the gathering at Bally's Hotel in Las Vegas.

Biden's visit came a day after Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney campaigned in North Las Vegas. Both candidates are competing fiercely for Nevada's six electoral votes ahead of the November election.

Danny Pagan, a retired, 28-year Army veteran from Conyers, Georgia, said he was impressed by the speech and said he's seen Obama policies helping veterans firsthand.

"The president is doing what he said he's doing for veterans and that's what it's all about," Pagan said.

Stacy Tuck, a Disabled American Veterans member from Kaysville, Utah, said the administration has "stepped up" to help veterans, but was more skeptical about Biden's broad promises.

"People tell you what you want to hear," she said.

Soap Dish: Jerry Jacks Is Back On General Hospital

It is Soap Dish time again my friends and this time I am dishing all about the return of General Hospital?s super bad guy Jerry Jacks! I have to say the reveal that one of my favorite GH villain?s is not only back but the one keeping Robin as a hostage was outstanding. Frist of all the powers that be at the ABC soap did a kick butt job of keeping the news that Sebastian Roche was reprising the role of Jerry Jacks a secret. Seriously these days with the Internet keeping info like that a secret is really hard to do. That could be why I was shocked and thrilled to learn of his return when I watched the show on Friday. Fans of GH know that Jerry is basically pure evil but boy oh boy does he add some excitement. Not good excitement but thrilling drama that the show is known for. Now that we know he is working with Ewan or rather forcing the doc to work with him it has certainly peaked a number of questions. I can?t wait to see how this story unfolds. I don?t know how long Jerry Jacks will be back but [...]

The OtherSite ? Truth? Justice? Peace? Is a new initiative by Dr. Gabi Weber & Simon K?hl in Freiburg, South Germany.

Dr. Gabi Weber of Freidburg, Germany

(SALEM / FREIDBURG) - A new German Website, http://othersite.org/about/, aims at providing a platform for open exchange of idea and discourse without censorship, mainly about topics related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This new project is welcome news for those of us who endeavor to tell the real, albeit unpopular truth, of the real nature of Israel's structure of military politics that completely impact the life of every Palestinian.

Among the many people who have provided timely and critical information to our newsroom over the years about the struggle in Palestine, are a steadfast few who never waiver or lose their way. Lesson one for all involved: defending the Palestinians who are stripped of their human rights, brings the wrath of the fundamentalist Zionist Israeli government and its well funded supporters.

Dr. Gabi Weber: a German physician, working full-time in an orthopedic rehabilitation hospital, defies the insults and ridiculous charges as she conducts and publishes research related to the tragedy of a place that was invaded by armed Jewish refugees 64 years ago. As the mother of three Palestinian-German kids, she has a personal stake in it.

The story of Israel and Palestine involves a series of tragic periods of ethnic cleansing and human indifference. Israel is still fighting what many see as a war for religious dominance and there are no rules in waging this campaign it seems - based on the historical records that are easily accessible to all of us. Dr. Weber says the new site will encourage positive discussion for those already engaged.

?

Our aim is to encourage journalists, thinkers, writers, artists, musicians and activists to share their thoughts and to narrate their own story.

It is our belief that German society could benefit from receiving "true" information concerning Palestine and the Arab world from additional sources rather than the usual mainstream media.

?

Also keenly involved in the new Website is Simon K?hl is a German hydrologist who works for a software company. During his childhood, he read a series of books dealing with the German history ? such as "Mit dem R?cken zur Wand" and "Die wei?e Rose". This opened a path for his further investigation of this particular period of German history. Over time and due to his engagement with the holocaust he developed special interest in Israel and the Palestinian cause.

In May 2010 she founded Cafe Palestine Freiburg together with a friend. Cafe Palestine is a non-profit body organising lectures, talks, conferences, exhibitions, concerts and many other activities on a monthly basis. Topics are related to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.http://cafepalestinefreiburg.blogspot.de/

Since the Hydrological Institute of Freiburg University had a strong cooperation with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Simon was wondering about the other side and in particular Palestinian water issues. Finally he spent six months of internship at Birzeit University in the West Bank and the PWA (Palestinian Water Authority). He explains that during this time, he underwent a most powerful experience, which affected his everyday life.

Q&A with Gabi Weber

Tim King: Can you describe the type of content that people will see?

Dr. Gabi Weber: The general impression is that German society could very well do with receiving "True" information concerning the Middle East and related topics from a different and additional media source. The aim is to collate and disseminate relevant articles from the alternative media about Middle Eastern topics namely human rights, which I started to deal with since the massacre on the Palestinian Gaza Strip in 2008-2009.

Furthermore, we aspire to present the German-language readers with content written in German and with relevant content translated into German from other languages. Gradually, a database of articles will be collated and demonstrated on my website which will help in-depth research. In this way, I will enhance availability and accessibility to the reader.

Tim King: How about the people helping with the project?

Dr. Gabi Weber: The website is open to any valuable material, be it abstract information or critical analysis. Names of authors and or any other people assisting in the publication process may appear on the website, should they have no objection. The initiative would benefit from passionate people who think that they can contribute, including writers, translators and editors etc.

Tim King: Why this is important?

Dr. Gabi Weber: Given then fact that people come from different societies and upbringing and have passed multiple processes of socialization, their level of knowledge and politicization of international relations, is different. Therefore, I thought it is a positive move to enrich their knowledge (unlike abstract information only) so that they are able to make an educated opinion in their daily political participation as citizens in their countries.

In fact it was due to her own first-hand experience with the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, that Dr. Gabi Weber started her political activism. This was in January 2009, during the war on Gaza. Gabi began to transmit news from alterative media, built a useful Internet list and a network, corresponding with organizations, activists, scholars, schools and other groups all around the world. In fact this is a time when many people came to fully grasp the fact that Israel was killing civilians en mass, including more than 400 children.

Gabi says the further aim is to collate and disseminate relevant articles from the alternative media about Middle Eastern topics, namely human rights, which Dr. Weber has been dealing with since the massacre on the Palestinian Gaza Strip in 2008-2009.

?

Moreover, we aspire to present the German-language readers with content written in German (which will be sorted in one section) and with relevant content translated into German from other languages. (A section in English will be established).

Gradually, a database of articles will be collated and demonstrated on this website which will be conducive for in-depth research. In this way, we will enhance availability and accessibility to the reader.

The website is open to all and particularly to any valuable material, be it abstract information or critical analysis. Names of authors and or any other people assisting in the publication process may appear on the website, should they have no objection. The initiative would benefit from passionate individuals who are able to contribute, including writers, translators and editors etc.

?

This new Website by Dr. Gabi Weber and Simon K?hl is an excellent new project that will contribute to important efforts underway to educate the people about the lives of Palestinians and why change is mandatory. I know many who write about Middle east affairs will be using it as a resource, I suggest visiting the site regularly.

Tim King: Salem-News.com Editor and Writer

Al Franken and Tim King in Afghanistan

Tim King has more than twenty years of experience on the west coast as a television news producer, photojournalist, reporter and assignment editor. Tim is Salem-News.com's Executive News Editor. His background includes covering the war in Afghanistan in 2006 and 2007, and reporting from the Iraq war in 2008. Tim is a former U.S. Marine who follows stories of Marines and Marine Veterans; he's covered British Royal Marines and in Iraq, Tim embedded with the same unit he served with in the 1980's.

He holds awards for reporting, photography, writing and editing from traditional mainstream news agencies like The Associated Press and Electronic Media Association; he also holds awards from the National Coalition of Motorcyclists, the Oregon Confederation of Motorcycle Clubs; and was presented with a 'Good Neighbor Award' for his reporting, by the The Red Cross.

Tim's years as a Human Rights reporter have taken on many dimensions; he has rallied for a long list of cultures and populations and continues to every day, with a strong and direct concentration on the 2009 Genocide of Tamil Hindus and Christians in Sri Lanka. As a result of his long list of reports exposing war crimes against Tamil people, Tim was invited to be the keynote speaker at the FeTNA (Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America) Conference in Baltimore, in July 2012. This is the largest annual gathering of North American Tamils; Tim addressed more than 3000 people and was presented with a traditional Sri Lanka ?blessed garland? and a shawl as per the tradition and custom of Tamil Nadu, India.

The notorious list comprising Tim's ancestors includes Pedro de Alvarado, the lieutenant of Hernando Cortez of Spain; King Phillip IV, Eleanor of Aquitaine and William the Conqueror. Perhaps most interestingly, King John; the dark force in the story Robin Hood, and also the last Spanish governor of California, a real person fictionalized as the arch rival of the character in Zorro, are in reality both Tim's multiple-great grandfathers.

Others include a Confederate officer in the U.S. Civil War and a decorated 'hero' of the Mexican-American War and the so-called 'Indian Wars'. In fact on the east coast, Tim's lineage with the Slaughter and King families, pre-dates the Mayflower and several members of his family were soldiers in the Revolutionary War. He says his family's past; some of which is very dark; some quite chivalrous, presents a certain responsibility, and that in part drives his desire to see that people in today's world are not exploited or allowed to suffer in silence as victims of Human Rights violations, as people of previous times were.

In a personal capacity, Tim has written 2,026 articles as of March 2012 for Salem-News.com since the new format designed by Matt Lintz was launched in December, 2005. Serving readers with news from all over the globe, Tim's life is literally encircled by the endless news flow published by Salem-News.com, where more than 100 writers contribute stories from 23+ countries and regions.

Tim specializes in writing about political and military developments worldwide; and maintains that the label 'terrorist' is ill placed in many cases; specifically with the LTTE Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka, where it was used as an excuse to slaughter people by the tens of thousands; and in Gaza, where a trapped population lives at the mercy of Israel's destructive military war crime grinder. At the center of all of this, Tim pays extremely close attention to the safety and welfare of journalists worldwide. You can write to Tim at this address: tim@salem-news.com. NASA Splits $1.1B For Three Commercial Spacecraft

On one hand, I am glad to see how much private sector interest there is in space exploration and tourism. Ultimately, it will be commericialization and profit opportunity that propels mankind to the stars.

OTOH, the reason we are seeing so much of it now is that the US has given up its leadership position in science. I'm not saying we aren't still on the top of the heap, but while Republicans and Democrats argue about whether we should drive ourselves into debt funding the military or social programs, science funding has suffered. When 50% of GDP growth since WW2 has come directly from science, this short-sighted non-funding view will cripple us.

Ultimately, there are projects where profits cannot be privatized. In these instances, government funding is the only way to go. But this doesn't get votes, so we are stuck.

Cynically Yours,
MyLongNickName

They Want To See My Taxes, Too - Palisades Hudson Financial Group

Lately, we have developed a fascination with other people?s tax returns.

It?s no surprise. Already, many Americans post the most mundane details on Facebook and share unfiltered thoughts on Twitter. There are still others who are not shy about watching pornography on a tablet or laptop screen ? the picture clarity is amazing these days ? even while sitting in an airliner?s middle seat.

But personal finances, and especially income tax returns, were a last bastion of modesty. We Baby Boomers were raised to avoid needlessly talking about our own net worth or idly inquiring about anyone else?s. We heard the phrase ?mind your own business? a lot.

Unauthorized disclosure of confidential tax return information is still a felony under the Internal Revenue Code. At the same time, the law doesn?t stop any of us from voluntarily publishing our own tax returns, and neither law nor social etiquette prevents some people from feeling entitled to our private information.

Consider the demand by President Obama?s re-election campaign that his opponent, Mitt Romney, ?come clean? by releasing to the public his tax returns going back more than a decade. The very deliberate implication in this phrasing is that there is something dirty in Romney?s returns or in his insistence on keeping them private, or both.

Romney has already released his tax information for 2010. He has also promised to disclose his 2011 tax data when his returns are complete. Like many people who own interests in partnerships and other closely held businesses, Romney?s 2011 returns are on extension until Oct. 15. He may not have the information needed to finish his returns until mid-September, when businesses must complete their own tax filings. I have an extension of my own for the same reason. So do many people for whom my firm prepares returns.

The Obama campaign?s demands are designed to put Romney in a corner. If he releases his old returns, even if his tax compliance is flawless, the data can at least be milked for variations on a favorite theme: that Romney is a very rich man. If Romney does not release the returns, Democrats can accuse him of withholding data to which the public believes it is entitled, and they also will imply that he has something to hide.

Even some Republicans believe that Romney should release the returns and put the matter to rest. Politically, they may be right. But there are some sound ethical and business reasons why Romney might refuse to placate his critics, regardless of the campaign consequences.

One reason involves Romney?s business partners. Business partners usually share profits proportionately. To an extent, any disclosure by Romney is a disclosure of his partners? finances. If I were Romney, I would be entitled to reveal my own information, but I would feel an obligation to avoid needlessly disclosing personal information about my partners. Clearly, Romney has already considered this; he decided to disclose his taxes for 2010 and thereafter. But the excessive demands for Romney?s previous tax returns are even more excessive from his associates? point of view. Romney probably does not want to put them in the uncomfortable position of having to choose between objecting to the release and thus hindering his campaign, or otherwise assenting to the disclosure of their private business affairs.

Romney?s stance can also be traced to a basic principle of the private equity business: that it is private.? Romney is no longer directly affiliated with Bain Capital, but many colleagues who helped him build the firm are still active as partners and employees.? Disclosing details about past transactions potentially puts the business at a disadvantage. If you were to buy a company and later managed to turn a large profit upon sale, the seller from whom you bought it may be reluctant to engage in another business deal with you. ? Romney seems unprepared, unlike other politicians, to throw his former colleagues and their livelihoods under the bus.

The practice of disclosing presidential tax returns dates back to Richard Nixon. Nixon released his tax returns during his years in the White House to try to quell suspicions which arose due to his ability to acquire impressive properties in California and Florida despite a long, modestly paid career in public service. It didn?t help matters that the properties were refurbished at considerable taxpayer expense. Nixon?s tax returns revealed an aggressive and opportunistic taxpayer who pushed the limits of credibility. Then again, Nixon pushed the limits of credibility in a lot of other ways.

The routine release of presidential tax returns did not begin until Jimmy Carter took office. Recently that custom has been extended to presidential candidates. But, to my knowledge, nobody has ever faced the kind of demands directed at Romney. Unlike the questions surrounding Nixon?s finances, the source of Romney?s wealth is well documented, self-generated and entirely from the private sector.

Some of the most strident calls for disclosure of Romney?s tax returns have come from congressional Democrats, including both House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and her Senate counterpart, Harry Reid. Yet McClatchy Newspapers recently pointed out that like most other members of Congress, Pelosi and Reid keep their own returns confidential. Want to see Sen. Jay Rockefeller?s return? Tough luck, his flacks told McClatchy. How about Joseph Kennedy III, who is currently a candidate for retiring Rep. Barney Frank?s seat in Massachusetts? No dice, even though a Kennedy family member?s returns might be of public interest. .I don?t know whether anyone has even asked for Kennedy?s returns.

Strangers sometimes ask for mine, though I have never sought or held public office. I just offer my opinions in public. That seems to be enough to make some people want to know my private business.

Last week, the Scarsdale, N.Y., Patch site picked up my column on Obama?s ?you didn?t build that? comment.? This sparked a long-running online debate. By late this week there were more than 200 comments on the site.

One reader, identifying himself only as Glenn, wrote: ?Larry, as the founder and President of Palisades Hudson Financial Group, LLC, I have to wonder what your actual taxes paid are, and those of your clients. We need tax equity in this country.?

Glenn went on to guess that Romney paid less than 15 percent overall in taxes on his ?tens of millions in earnings.? Glenn can only guess because the pre-2010Romney tax returns are not public. But it is an educated guess and probably reasonably accurate, which is another reason why neither Romney?s returns nor mine are relevant to the public debate over tax rates. The tax law is a matter of public record. If Romney paid a low overall rate, it is because of provisions within the law that grant preferential treatment to capital gains and allow deductions for large gifts to charity. There are many people who disagree with these provisions, but we don?t need to see Romney?s tax return to know what the law is or what we think about it.

My situation is different. I?m not in the private equity business. Virtually all of the income my wife and I receive is taxed at ordinary income rates. We don?t contribute nearly as high a proportion of our income to charity as the Romneys do. We do have significant mortgage debt, but this is one itemized deduction which the Romneys probably don?t rely upon.

In 2010 my wife and I paid 37 percent of our adjusted gross income in federal and state income taxes, and the payroll and self-employment taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare.

Does my disclosure of this information change anything? I can?t see how. I?m still a business owner and high-bracket taxpayer. The tax law still says what it says. What else do you need to know, about my taxes or Romney?s?

One reason our parents taught us to mind our own business is that it is not productive to do otherwise. The other reason is that nosiness is just rude. When demands for disclosure move beyond ensuring the integrity of public servants and become a tool of idle gossip and calculated political attack, it?s time to remember what our parents told us.
