Foodies show up at California State Fair

SACRAMENTO, CA - High calorie counts are not enough to keep people away from fair food.

The California State Fair is all about fun, but it's also about food for many.

"Oh yeah! Every year we come for the food, every year," Jerry Meza said. "We've been coming for 12 years!"

Funnel cakes, footlongs and French fries put a smile on foodies' faces, both big and small.

"I'm starting off with the ceviche, then I'm going to build my way up to the heavy cholesterol and fried things," said a man from San Diego.

Although California restaurants are required to post health information on their menus, food vendors in places like the state fair are not.

"Our menu labeling laws that went into affect a few years ago were for our fixed-facility chain restaurants and they did not affect the temporary booths such as these," Sacramento County Supervising Environmental Specialist Zarha Ruiz said.

Some of the calorie counts, according to Web MD:

  • Fried candy bars - 444 calories
  • Funnel cakes - 760 calories
  • Giant turkey legs - 1,136 calories

There are some healthy food options at the state fair, but you just have to keep your eyes open.

Fair goers can opt for grilled veggies instead of fried in some places or keep off some fatty condiments.

No matter what you choose to eat at the fair, experts said it's all about enjoying everything in moderation.

Jury selection begins for Army general in sex case

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) ? Jury selection has started at Fort Bragg for a U.S. Army general facing court-martial on sexual assault charges.

Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Sinclair has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges including forcible sodomy, indecent acts, violating orders and adultery.

A dozen potential jurors were brought in for questioning Tuesday. All are major generals or lieutenant generals. At least five will be chosen for the trial set for Sept. 30.

All said they had heard about the case.

Defense attorneys question if it's possible to select jurors who would not worry about career ramifications if they voted to acquit Sinclair.

The 27-year Army veteran has commanded troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is accused of forcing a female aide with whom he had an extramarital affair to perform oral sex.

FDA approves Boehringer drug for lung cancer

The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that it approved a new drug from Boehringer Ingelheim for patients with a genetic variant of advanced lung cancer.

The agency said it approved the company's Gilotrif for lung cancer patients who test positive for certain gene mutations in their tumors. The agency approved the drug alongside a diagnostic test from Qiagen NV designed to detect the mutation.

The test detects epidermal growth factor receptor abnormalities found in roughly 10 percent of patients with the most prevalent form of lung cancer, known as non-small cell lung cancer.

Patients taking the drug in company studies experienced 4 more months without their cancer spreading than patients taking chemotherapy alone. The drug did not extend survival overall.

Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer among men and women in the U.S. and is expected to kill nearly 160,000 people this year, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The FDA specifically approved the drug for untreated cancer that has spread from the lungs.

Common side effects of the drug include diarrhea, skin breakouts, dry skin and mouth inflammation.

"The approval of companion diagnostic tests and drugs are important developments in oncology, as they help us bring safe and effective treatments to patients who need them," said Alberto Gutierrez, FDA's director of in vitro diagnostics.

Shares of Netherlands-based Qiagen NV rose 60 cents, or 3 percent, to $20.52 in late New York trading. Boehringer Ingelheim is based in Germany.

Back to sports roots with soccer tournament

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to do something I haven?t done for more than 15 years. For a few of the high school athletes I interacted with, that was before they were born ?? or when they were only toddlers.

As a last-minute need arose, I was tapped to be the PA announcer for a number of games at the 2013 WIAA Girls Soccer State Tournament at Uihlein Soccer Park on the city?s northwest side. In high school and college I worked the PA for basketball and football games, so I had a little knowledge of doing starting lineups and giving credit when points were scored.

But, I have to admit, I was pretty rusty for the Division 1 quarterfinal game, the first played during the three-day tournament. With the help of Allison, Ann and Mike (King of Milwaukee Wave fame) from the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club in the booth with me, I found a groove by the time I hit the Division 2 and 3 semifinal matches.

Despite covering high school soccer when I worked in newspapers years ago, and doing the sideline reporting and color commentary for three seasons of high school football games on WAUK-AM 540 ESPN here in Milwaukee, that experience didn?t prepare me for the PA work. Sure, I had to be comfortable with my voice and pronouncing names on a microphone, but the rhythm of the unlimited substitutions took a while to get down. I don?t think I ever mastered it.

For instance, the Ozaukee Warriors had a Yanke and two players with the last name of Janke on the squad. And Yanke would sub out for a Janke and vice versa. Then there was the team from Ashland that traveled for six hours to get to Milwaukee for its Division 2 game against Catholic Memorial. I don?t think I ever got the Oredockers? Molly Kovala?s name right on the speaker.

But overall, it was a great time and it took me back to my early sports roots. Thank you to Tammy Gilpin-Ripp, the WIAA and the Milwaukee Kickers Soccer Club for the opportunity.

Apple files for 'iWatch' trademark in Japan

(AP) ? Apple Inc. has applied for a trademark in Japan for "iWatch," indicating it may be proceeding with rumored plans to produce a smart wristwatch.

A document obtained Monday from the Japan Patent Office's website said the application was made June 3 and made public June 27.

It was not immediately clear when the application might be approved. Patent office and Apple officials in Japan were not available for comment late Monday.

Apple is rumored to be working on a smart watch that would run on a version of the operating system used by its iPhone and iPad. The company has not confirmed those rumors, but CEO Tim Cook has hinted that it may be developing a wearable computing device such as a wristwatch.
