The 7 deadly sins of personal finance | Finance Guide

Being a little richer in theory is not complicated. Just learn to spend less, and if not enough learning to earn some extra money. But we are not entirely rational beings, and we have to deal with our emotions and predispositions. Let?s talk about which would be the 7 major sins to a person seeking to improve their personal finances.

Lust

No need to think about sex. In personal finance, fantasizing about what you would do with more money, about what you could buy, and imagine rich is a form of lust. Do not waste time dreaming about how nice it would have more money. Leave that to those who waste your money playing the Euro Millions.

sins of personal finance

Gluttony

This is what happens when you get things too rushed. Those yearning for success can lead you to risk too much, for example by choosing investments with high returns (i.e., high risk), or putting up too much of your personal savings to invest with leverage strong.

Avarice

Money is not everything in life. Spend the savings, just think about which will be your next move to get some benefit not going to make you happier.

Laziness

Decisions put off until tomorrow that could be taken today to improve your economy (especially cut costs or find a new job), or dedicate yourself to doing only the part you like about the difficult things are significant risks. It is also a form of laziness think you can pay tomorrow what you cannot today and use credit.

Anger

Being angry is often the emotional response to the frustration of not getting what you want at any given time. Altered but no use at all, better relax, analyze what you did wrong and correct.

Envy

Envy and the need to show others an image of social success lead to catastrophes in personal finance. Focus on you, who you are and who you want to be. Define your goals in life and forget what you may think of others.

Pride

Never believe you?re right in everything. Good results have been achieved so far do not mean that you are going to get in the future. One thing is confidence in yourself (essential) and quite another pride. Listen to the opinions of others and learn. Humility often can save you a very wrong decision.

These are the 7 deadly sins for the investor who seeks to improve their personal financial situation. There is certainly more dangerous, but if you can hold off these temptations, you have a good chance of getting your financial goals.

Clothing the body electric: Cotton T-shirt fabric can store electricity, maybe keep your cell phone charged

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? Over the years, the telephone has gone mobile, from the house to the car to the pocket. The University of South Carolina's Xiaodong Li envisions even further integration of the cell phone -- and just about every electronic gadget, for that matter -- into our lives.

He sees a future where electronics are part of our wardrobe.

"We wear fabric every day," said Li, a professor of mechanical engineering at USC. "One day our cotton T-shirts could have more functions; for example, a flexible energy storage device that could charge your cell phone or your iPad."

Li is helping make the vision a reality. He and post-doctoral associate Lihong Bao have just reported in the journal Advanced Materials how to turn the material in a cotton T-shirt into a source of electrical power.

Starting with a T-shirt from a local discount store, Li's team soaked it in a solution of fluoride, dried it and baked it at high temperature. They excluded oxygen in the oven to prevent the material from charring or simply combusting.

The surfaces of the resulting fibers in the fabric were shown by infrared spectroscopy to have been converted from cellulose to activated carbon. Yet the material retained flexibility; it could be folded without breaking.

"We will soon see roll-up cell phones and laptop computers on the market," Li said. "But a flexible energy storage device is needed to make this possible."

The once-cotton T-shirt proved to be a repository for electricity. By using small swatches of the fabric as an electrode, the researchers showed that the flexible material, which Li's team terms activated carbon textile, acts as a capacitor. Capacitors are components of nearly every electronic device on the market, and they have the ability to store electrical charge.

Moreover, Li reports that activated carbon textile acts like double-layer capacitors, which are also called a supercapacitors because they can have particularly high energy storage densities.

But Li and Bao took the material even further than that. They then coated the individual fibers in the activated carbon textile with "nanoflowers" of manganese oxide. Just a nanometer thick, this layer of manganese oxide greatly enhanced the electrode performance of the fabric. "This created a stable, high-performing supercapacitor," said Li.

This hybrid fabric, in which the activated carbon textile fibers are coated with nanostructured manganese oxide, improved the energy storage capability beyond the activated carbon textile alone. The hybrid supercapacitors were resilient: even after thousands of charge-discharge cycles, performance didn't diminish more than 5 percent.

"By stacking these supercapacitors up, we should be able to charge portable electronic devices such as cell phones," Li said.

Li is particularly pleased to have improved on the means by which activated carbon fibers are usually obtained. "Previous methods used oil or environmentally unfriendly chemicals as starting materials," he said. "Those processes are complicated and produce harmful side products. Our method is a very inexpensive, green process."

Cybercrime disclosures rare despite new SEC rule

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Hackers broke into computers at hotel giant Wyndham Worldwide Corp. three times in two years and stole credit card information belonging to hundreds of thousands of customers. Wyndham didn't report the break-in in corporate filings even though the Securities and Exchange Commission wants companies to inform investors of cybercrimes.

Amid whispers of sensational online break-ins resulting in millions of dollars in losses, it remains remarkably difficult to identify corporate victims of cybercrimes. Companies are afraid that going public would damage their reputations, sink stock prices or spark lawsuits.

The chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., is adding a provision to cybersecurity legislation that would strengthen the reporting requirement. The SEC's cybersecurity guidance issued in October is not mandatory. It was intended to update for the digital age a requirement that companies report "material risks" that investors want to know.

Rockefeller's measure would direct the SEC's five commissioners to make clear when companies must disclose cyber breaches and spell out steps they are taking to protect their computer networks from electronic intrusions.

"It's crucial that companies are disclosing to investors how cybersecurity risks affect their bottom lines, and what they are doing to address those risks," Rockefeller said Friday.

The SEC recently challenged Internet retailer Amazon's decision to omit from its 2011 annual report references to the online theft of customer data held by Zappos, an online shoe company owned by Amazon. Amazon eventually agreed to modify the statement slightly, according to correspondence between the company and the SEC. But the company still argued that the Zappos attack was not covered by the commission's cybersecurity guidance because it had no material impact on Amazon's business.

Cybercrime is rampant and not confined to the United States. The head of Britain's domestic spy agency said this week that cybersecurity ranks alongside terrorism as one of the United Kingdom's most pressing security challenges. In one recent case, an unspecified, London-listed company hit by a cyberattack incurred revenue losses of $1.2 billion, MI5 Director General Jonathan Evans said in rare public remarks in London. He did not identify the company or say which country was behind the attack. The U.S. has said China and Russia are the governments most frequently engaged in such hacking.

"What is at stake is not just our government secrets but also the safety and security of our infrastructure, the intellectual property that underpins our future prosperity, and the commercially sensitive information that is the lifeblood of our companies and corporations," Evans said.

Research by a cybersecurity expert shows dozens of Fortune 500 companies have lost a wide range of valuable information to cybercrimes, including intellectual property, bank account credentials, restricted data about patients of pharmaceutical companies and internal legal records.

Rodney Joffe of Neustar, an Internet infrastructure management company in Virginia, monitors networks used by online criminal groups and traces the origin of stolen information. He found evidence that 162 out 168 companies in the manufacturing, chemical and transportation sectors had been compromised. The names of the companies are being kept confidential for proprietary reasons, he said.

"No one is safe. Everyone is compromised," said Joffe, Neustar's senior technologist. "When people tell you, 'We are protected as a company,' they are really fooling themselves."

The SEC isn't tracking how many companies comply with its cybersecurity guidance. But publicly traded companies historically have resisted supplying information about cyber incidents because it highlights their weak spots, said Peter Toren, a former federal prosecutor with the Justice Department's computer crime division.

"It just doesn't look good," Toren said.

The breach of Wyndham's computers was described in a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit filed this week against the company and three subsidiaries for alleged security failures that led to the three data breaches between April 2008 and January 2010. The failures caused "the export of hundreds of thousands of consumers' payment card account information to an Internet domain address registered in Russia" and millions of dollars in fraudulent charges on consumers' accounts, the FTC said.

Wyndham didn't mention the break-ins in its 2011 annual report or prior securities filings, according to an Associated Press review of the records.

Wyndham's 2011 annual report said the "hospitality industry is under increasing attack by cyber-criminals in the U.S. and other jurisdictions in which we operate" and noted that it was involved in "claims relating to information security and data privacy." Wyndham spent $13 million more on security improvements and expects to spend as much as $100 million in 2012 to guard against "the increasingly aggressive global threat from cyber-criminals," according to the report.

Wyndham said in an emailed statement to The Associated Press that it "fully complied with SEC regulations in regards to the disclosure of material events." In the statement, Wyndham said the incidents were "previously reported," an apparent reference to notices to consumers that were published on the company's website. The company also said the FTC's claims were without merit.

Network infrastructure company Verisign reported in late October, just a few weeks after the SEC issued the guidance, that there had been several successful cyberattacks against its corporate networks in 2010. In the filing, Verisign said the company's management had not been informed of the attacks until September 2011.

LinkedIn, the online networking service, publicly announced on June 12 the online theft of 6.5 million user passwords. It said the announcement complies with its obligations to the SEC, but it has yet to file a report about the incident with the commission.

The new SEC guidance puts pressure on companies to decide whether to disclose a breach or keep it secret, said Jody Westby of Global Cyber Risk, a consulting firm. But she said the demand for information amounts to locking the door after the house has been robbed.

"The SEC would have done better to require all public companies to say whether they've taken actions to implement a security program," Westby said.

Woman?s iPhone overheats and melts floor mat

News

A woman in Florida U.S. has reported that her iPhone 3GS began spontaneously smoking and overheated so badly that it melted her car?s floor mat.

Jacqueline Ivanov was driving on the interstate near Orlando when she saw smoke billowing out of her iPhone. She tried to pick the smartphone up, but promptly dropped the fiercely hot device. The iPhone had melted the car mat by the time she was able to stop the car.

?It would have melted my hand. It would have melted my skin right off,? she told reporters.

Apple have yet to issue a comment, although they have pledged to investigate the incident.

These kinds of overheating incidents are frequently the result of a previous knock or liquid intrusion, either of which can disrupt the internal circuitry and cause short-circuits. Ivanov has said she dropped the iPhone 3GS into a swimming pool more than a year before it overheated, but thought she?s solved the problem by leaving the iPhone in a bowl of rice for a few days.

News Corp announces plans to split

(AP) ? Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. said Thursday that it plans to split into two separate companies, one holding its newspaper business and the other its entertainment operations.

Under the proposal, the global media conglomerate will be divided into two publicly traded companies. One entity will operate as a newspaper and book publishing firm. The other will be an entertainment company that includes the 20th Century Fox movie studio, the Fox broadcast TV network and the Fox News channel.

The Murdoch family, which controls nearly 40 percent of the voting shares in News Corp., is expected to maintain control of both companies.

"There is much work to be done, but our board and I believe that this new corporate structure we are pursuing would accelerate News Corporation's businesses to grow to new heights, and enable each company and its divisions to recognize their full potential ? and unlock even greater long-term shareholder value," Murdoch said in a statement.

The splitting of News Corp. is a symbolic turning point for its 81-year-old CEO. Murdoch's global conglomerate was built on the foundation of a single Australian newspaper he inherited from his father. Through the years, he maintained a fondness for newspapers even as he purchased entertainment companies and assembled a company with a market value of $52 billion. In hearings last summer before U.K. lawmakers, he conceded that he regularly called newspaper editors under his employ with the greeting: "What's doing?"

Investors have already given their blessing to the split, having pushed shares of the company's Class B stock up 10 percent since the news of the plan broke early Tuesday.

Under the current proposal, News Corp. shareholders will receive one share of common stock in the new company for each share of News Corp. that they currently hold. Each company would maintain two classes of stock.

Murdoch will serve as chairman of both companies and CEO of the media and entertainment company. The company said it plans to put together management teams and boards for both businesses over the next several months.

The split remains subject to final board and regulatory approvals. News Corp. said it also plans to hold a meeting of its shareholders sometime in 2013 and expects it to be completed in about a year.

Analysts relished the prospect that the faster growing pay TV segment would be valued more highly by new investors who weren't willing to buy shares in a company being dragged down by a newspaper industry in decline.

Still, many analysts had questions about which entity would bear the financial risks of the ongoing U.K. probe into phone hacking and bribery. Besides legal costs, News Corp. also faces potential fines in the U.S. under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which punishes companies that have bribed officials abroad.

Breaking off the newspaper and book publishing assets into a separate company makes them more "bite size" and ripe for being taken private by a third party, according to Needham & Co. analyst Laura Martin.

The publishing side is expected to be much smaller, with some analysts valuing it at about $5 billion, compared with the current market value for News Corp. as a whole of about $54 billion.

It is unclear if the split will appease the British telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, which is reviewing whether British Sky Broadcasting ? of which News Corp. holds a 39 percent stake ? is "fit and proper" to hold a broadcasting license. Ofcom is expected to wrap up its review later this summer.

British authorities have been probing allegations that News Corp. journalists at its now-shuttered News of the World and other papers hacked into phones and bribed public officials to gain exclusive information.

News Corp. shares rose 19 cents to $22.60 in premarket trading.

Duke Energy warns of ?President paying your bills? scam

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Duke Energy is alerting customers about a new identity theft scam claiming that their utility bills will be paid by President Obama through a federal program.

The company says that the scammers are contacting customers in person, through fliers, or through social media and text messages.

The customers are then asked for their birth day, social security number, and bank account information before being given a false bank account through which their utility bills can be paid through the program.

In reality, the company says, there is no money in the fake account, and the customer's bills are not being paid.

Duke Energy, along with the Better Business Bureau, is working to keep consumers educated, and are asking customers to follow a few simple steps in order to avoid getting involved in this or any other scam:

  • Never provide your social security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone or at your home unless you initiated the contact and feel confident with whom you are speaking.
  • If you receive a call claiming to be your utility company and feel pressured for immediate payment or personal information, hang up the phone and call the customer service number on your utility bill.
  • Never allow anyone into your home to check electrical wiring, natural gas pipes or appliances unless you have scheduled an appointment or have reported a utility problem. Also, ask utility employees for proper identification.
  • Always think safety first. Do not give in to high pressure tactics over the phone for information or in person to get into your home.

Family Services Department honors Tribal foster parents | The ...

By Brett Daly

BIG CYPRESS ? In recognition of National Foster Care Month during May, the Family Preservation program of the Family Services Department recognized the nearly 70 Tribal families who have opened their homes to foster children.

The parents and staff met at the Big Cypress Community Center on May 30 for a special luncheon that honored the parents for their dedication to their Tribe and to the future of their youth.

?It?s an exceptional person, in my opinion, who can step up and take care of someone else?s child,? Family Services director Helene Buster said. ?We as a Tribe need to step up and nurture our children. They are our family. They are our future.?

The Family Preservation program provides Seminole children a temporary home when their parents cannot take care of them. The ultimate goal, Buster said, is to reunite the children with their parents.

During the luncheon, Family Services thanked each foster parent with an award, and Councilmen Mondo Tiger and Marcellus W. Osceola Jr. also recognized the parents? services to the Tribe.

?Without you guys, it wouldn?t be possible for these children to have the lives they have; they would be off the reservation,? Councilman Osceola said. ?I?m glad to see you guys are stepping up and carrying on this tradition.?

Family Services has found foster homes for children for more than 15 years, but Family Preservation administrator Kristi Hill said the program continually evolves. The department performs home studies to make sure foster parents can provide safe homes, takes care of legal formalities and visits families regularly to check on children. At any given time, Hill said, they monitor around 100 foster children.

In addition, the department educates the State and the outside world of the importance of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), which seeks to keep Indian children with Indian families. According to the National Indian Child Welfare Association, Congress passed the ICWA in 1978 in response to the high number of Indian children being removed from their homes by both public and private agencies. The intent of Congress under ICWA was to ?protect the best interests of Indian children and to promote the stability and security of Indian Tribes and families.?

?We work hard keeping our children in our communities,? Buster said.

Placing Seminole children in Seminole homes ensures they receive an education in Seminole culture, language and traditions, Hill added.

?Children are the most valuable resource for a Tribe and its existence,? she said.

Tribal member Ella DeHass is one of the foster parents who took on the responsibility of caring for foster children and ensuring they stay within the Seminole Tribe.

Although DeHass said it?s not a decision to take on lightly, she said her life was conducive to becoming a foster parent. She had the time, space and income to do so. But it was her sister, Debbie, who informed her of the growing need to foster Tribal member children through Family Services. She made foster parenting a personal goal and contacted the department to get started.

?I wanted something more in my life,? she said. ?It?s a rewarding experience.?

During the last two years, DeHass has cared for six foster children. She is glad she made the commitment to be part of the solution.

?I would encourage every Tribal member to carry on the tradition of families helping families by becoming involved and to make a commitment to assist these young future leaders of the Tribe by providing them with a stable, secure family/home environment,? she said.

The Family Services Department plans to host similar events in the future to demonstrate their continuous appreciation of the foster parents.

?They are the heroes of our Tribe,? Buster said.

LIPC weapon combines lasers and lightning, proves soldiers are a bunch of nerds

LIPC weapon combines lasers and lightning, proves soldiers are a bunch of nerds

The problem with laser weapons is this -- they need a lot, a lot of power. Seriously. Some of those big, plane-mounted prototypes choke down enough juice to power a whole city. Not so with the Laser-Induced Plasma Channel weapon being developed by researchers at Picatinny Arsenal. While still using plenty of electricity, this more moderately specced laser is just powerful enough to strip electrons off the air molecules around it generating a thin filament of plasma. Its not the high-intensity laser pulse that does the damage, though. Instead, the channel of plasma is used as a conduit for a high-voltage blast of electricity. That laser-assisted bolt of lightning could disable vehicles, people and even IEDs. There are plenty of obstacles, including making the weapon rugged enough for battlefield use and reliable enough to keep the plasma channel from leading the blast of electricity back into the laser and damaging it. Now, if only we could find the video that still above was taken from.

I've got this hunk of maple that needs a new home. The pictures show all 6 sides. It's still green (right at 30%MC) and after the pictures I covered all sides with anchorseal. I'll let it go for 20 bucks plus shipping. It'll fit in a medium flat rate box which ships for around 12.00. I will take paypal.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Practically parked off Florida's Gulf Coast since the weekend, Tropical Storm Debby raked the Tampa Bay area with high wind and heavy rain Monday in a drenching that could top 2 feet over the next few days and trigger widespread flooding.

At least one person was killed Sunday by a tornado spun off by Debby in Florida, and Alabama authorities searched for a man who disappeared in the rough surf.

An estimated 35,000 homes and businesses lost electricity. But as of midafternoon, the slow-moving storm had caused only scattered damage, including flooding in some low-lying areas.

The bridge leading to St. George Island, a vacation spot along the Florida Panhandle, was closed to everyone except residents, renters and business owners to keep looters out. The island had no power, and palm trees had been blown down, but roads were passable.

"Most true islanders are hanging in there because they know that you may or may not be able to get back to your home when you need to," said David Walker, an island resident having a beer at Eddy Teach's bar. He said he had been through many storms on the island and Debby was on the weaker end of the scale.

Gov. Rick Scott declared a statewide emergency, allowing authorities to put laws against price-gouging into effect and override bureaucratic hurdles to deal with the storm.

By late afternoon, Debby was in the Gulf of Mexico, 30 miles southwest of Apalachicola, with sustained winds around 45 mph.

Forecasters said it would crawl to the northeast, come ashore along Florida's northwestern coast on Wednesday and track slowly across the state, exiting along the Atlantic Coast by Saturday morning and losing steam along the way.

Parts of northern Florida could get 10 to 15 inches of rain, and some spots as much as 25 inches, as the storm wrings itself out, forecasters said.

"The widespread flooding is the biggest concern," said Florida Emergency Operations Center spokeswoman Julie Roberts. "It's a concern that Debby is going to be around for the next couple of days, and while it sits there, it's going to continue to drop rain. The longer it sits, the more rain we get."

High winds and the threat of flooding forced the closing of an interstate highway bridge that spans Tampa Bay and links St. Petersburg with areas to the southwest.

People in several sparsely populated counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the danger of flooding. Shelters opened in some places.

On St. Pete Beach in the Tampa Bay area, surfers enjoyed the large waves in the Gulf, which is usually so calm the water looks like glass. Residents cleaned up debris in yards and streets from a possible tornado Sunday.

"The wind picked up so bad. It's very, very scary. I ran into the closet underneath the hallway stairs," said Ann Garrison, who has lived on the barrier island for 20 years but has never seen such strong winds. She said that when she came back out after just a few minutes, "the fence was gone, and it was in the middle of the yard."

Nearby, a likely tornado ripped the roof off a marina and an apartment complex and knocked down fences, trees and signs.

Kourosh Bakhtiarian's yard was flooded. He said people were driving around the neighborhood to gawk at the damage, and he complained that police hadn't closed off the streets.

"We have a lot of visitors from outside of this area. They just want to see exactly where the disaster is. I mean, this is not the happiest time," he said.

On St. George Island, many businesses were closed, but Eddy Teach's bar had a few customers and used a generator to keep beer and food cold.

"The tourists cleared out. It's not a good thing and hurts the economy during a week in peak season," said Patrick Sparks, a manager at the bar. He scoffed at the storm, which was well below the 74 mph threshold for a hurricane: "It's a little rash to send everyone home."

Real Estate Excellence Academy: Property Management Training ...

Part of Chapter 3 of PME - Property Management Excellence Training and Procedures Manual
www.realestateexcellence.com.au 3.3.13 Pool safety certificate
The Queensland Government introduced new pool safety laws in December 1 2009. This means that if a property with a pool or spa is rented or sold prior to December 1 2015, a Pool Safety Certificate must be obtained. A rental property (house) with a pool cannot be rented without a certificate. Shared pool obligations are outlined below.? In addition, all pools and spas in Queensland (regardless if a rental property) must be registered on the state government pool register ? to ensure a pool or spa is registered, visit www.dlgp.qld.gov.au Non-shared pools ? Houses -? If a pool is only accessible to residents of one dwelling such as a private house or private spa on a unit balcony, it is a non-shared pool. Before entering into a new or renewed lease for a property with a non-shared pool, there must be a pool safety certificate is in effect for the pool. (Form 23 under the Building Act)
Shared Pools ? Units -?? If residents of two or more dwellings can use a pool, such as a body corporate pool, it is a shared pool.? For shared pools, the owner or the body corporate must complete a Form 36 Notice of No Pool Safety Certificate. Form 36 must be given to the tenant. (after December 1 2012, a Pool Safety Certificate must be in place and the Form 36 should no longer be used for rental properties).
Until December 1 2012, property managers must give a Notice of no pool safety certificate - Form 36 to the person who will be the tenant, to the body corporate and to the department before entering into the lease for shared pools that do not yet have a Pool Safety Certificate. The Notice of no pool safety certificate - Form 36 advises that the pool may not comply and the steps that must be taken to comply. The Form 36 should not be used in Property Management after the 1st December 2012.
However, for leases entered into on or before 1 September 2012, a phase in period applies - the pool owner has until 30 November 2012 to obtain a pool safety certificate for the pool. If a new or renewed lease is entered into on or after 2 September 2012, the pool owner must obtain a pool safety certificate within 90 days of entering into the lease.
From December 1 2012, all rental properties must have a pool safety certificate in place for both units and houses. Property managers are not to rent properties that do not have a pool safety certificate and are to advise the licensee or senior manager immediately if there are any concerns relating to this matter.
Validity of pool safety certificates
Pool safety certificates are valid for two years from the date of issue for non-shared pools, and one year for shared pools. ?Systems are to be put in the software programme or other preferred programme to flag when pool safety certificates are expiring.
To ensure pool safety certificates remain effective, property managers should check the pool register each time a tenancy commences or a tenancy is renewed. Visit www.dlgp.qld.gov.au and follow the links to the pool safety register.
For more information about Pool Safety Law refers to Chapter 37 of PME ? Pool Safety Laws for sales and rental property. (C) www.realestateexcellence.com.au - for more information about PME, visit the website

The iOS 6 Twitter Widget Ported to iOS 5

?

We have seen a few iOS 6 features ported over to iOS 5, via some Cydia tweaks and themes, and today we have another. Scott Forstall introduced iOS 6 at WWDC 2012 and one of the many new features coming is the Twitter and Facebook widgets in the notification center. This is a quick and easy way to share what you?re thinking on the two most popular social networks.

If you have a jailbroken device, you can now get the iOS 6 Twitter Widget in iOS 5 with this new tweak simply called, ?iOS 6 Twitter Widget for Notification Center?. It mimics the look and functionality of the actual widget for iOS 6. You just pull down the notification center, tap the new widget, and the native iOS ?tweet sheet? pops up. Then you just send your Tweet as you normally would.

A copy of iOS 6?s Twitter widget for iOS 5.

Notification Center addons must first be enabled from the Settings app, in the Notifications panel

Check out these other iOS 6 tweaks and themes to make your iOS 5 device have the look and functionality of iOS 6. You can find the?iOS 6 Twitter Widget for Notification Center tweak in Cydia, under the Big Boss repo for free.

Samsung Galaxy S III (Sprint)

The new flagship?smartphone?from the world's number-one mobile phone company, Samsung's Galaxy S III ($199.99 with contract) is literally a huge achievement. If you love big phones with lots of options, the GS3 will deliver state-of-the-art performance with bonus sharing and media features that you're likely to continue discovering a year from now. Sprint subscribers now have two solid choices: The Galaxy S III ties with the HTC EVO 4G LTE ($199, 4 stars) as our Editors' Choice for touch-screen smartphones on Sprint.

Editors' Note: The Samsung Galaxy S III models on all four major carriers are extremely similar, so we're sharing a lot of material between our various reviews. That said, we're testing each device separately, so read the review for your carrier of choice.

Physical Design
All of the new Galaxy S III models look the same, except for the carrier logo on the back panel. Each is available in dark blue or white (AT&T also has a red option coming this summer), and they're some of the biggest phones we've ever handled. At 5.4 by 2.8 by 0.34 inches (HWD) and 4.7 ounces, the GS3 is slightly bigger than the already-large HTC One X ($199, 4.5 stars), although it's still noticeably smaller and lighter than the Samsung Galaxy Note phone/tablet hybrid ($299, 3 stars). ?That said, this is not a phone for folks with small hands.

I'm not a fan of the huge?phone. But I've given up on panning them because every time I suggest these handsets are too big, I get pummeled by comments from people who adore them. Huge phones are the thing. I accept it.

The all-plastic body feels a little less high-end than the exotic materials of the HTC One series, but the phone is solidly built, and light despite its size. The front of the phone is dominated by the 4.8-inch, 1280-by-720-pixel Super AMOLED HD screen. Yes, it's PenTile, which can sometimes look slightly pixelated. But, no, you probably won't notice. Below the screen, there's a physical Home button, as well as light-up Back and Multitasking buttons that start out invisible, so you have to memorize where they are or change a setting to keep them illuminated. The 8-megapixel camera is on the back panel, which, thanks to its reflective finish, doubles as a pocket mirror.?

The default Automatic Brightness setting makes the screen too dim. Kill it and pump up the brightness and it's fine, even outdoors. It's not as bright as the One X's Super LCD 2 display, but it's fine.

Unlike the competing HTC One X, the S III has a removable 2100mAh battery. Taking off the back cover also reveals the microSD card slot, which supports cards up to 64GB.

Call Quality and Internet
Are you willing for Sprint to pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today? The EVO 4G LTE ?promises spectacular call quality with HD Voice?sometime in 2013, once Sprint gets the network running. But the GS3 lets you tweak your call quality now.

Default call quality is good. Volume is on the high end of average, with no distortion from loud inputs. The speakerphone isn't quite loud enough to use outdoors, but it's fine for the car or a boardroom. The microphone does a good job of cancelling background noise. Bluetooth headsets work fine with Samsung's S-Voice voice dialing system.

But as with so many things here, call quality gets richer if you burrow down into the GS3's menus. A Volume Boost button throws the phone into a super-loud, quasi-speakerphone mode for noisy areas, but that's just the start. Deep within the settings, there's an option to set custom call EQ. The phone plays you a sequence of quiet high and low tones and you tell it which ones you can hear, and then it EQ's calls accordingly. This is pretty radical stuff. I prefer my calls sharp, with more high-end, and the GS3 delivers.

On data though, the Sprint GS3 is crippled. All new Sprint phones are. Although the phones support speedy LTE, Sprint has steadfastly refused to give us a rollout timetable for its new LTE network, leaving its high-end smartphones on the slowest 3G network in America. We tested Sprint LTE, and it's competitive with AT&T and Verizon, but none of this matters a whit if Sprint won't tell us when anyone is getting it.?

This is why Sprint's Galaxy S III is getting a slightly lower rating than the other major carrier models. Sprint needs to get its act together. We will not give a Sprint phone a 4.5-star rating until the carrier gives its subscribers more information about LTE coverage.

You'll have better luck getting your Internet via Wi-Fi on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC are also onboard, and Google Wallet is preloaded.

Our battery test didn't complete because we ran out of time. But that's good; we just about ran down the battery with an 8 hour, 35 minute call. This phone has solid battery life, and considering the battery is removable, you can carry a spare. That's something you can't do with the EVO 4G LTE.

Software and Performance
The Galaxy S III runs Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" with a whole lot of exclusive Samsung extensions. Performance was excellent in my tests. The Qualcomm S4 chip running at 1.5GHz is the fastest one we've seen in smartphones so far, and it's able to take on any app challenge you throw at it, including games on the HD screen. Our benchmark tests proved this, although they were within the margin of error when compared with the One X. Both phones are very fast.

Exclusive new features include S-Beam, the ability to transfer files by tapping two phones together and using a combination of NFC and Wi-Fi Direct; S-Voice, Samsung's answer to Apple's Siri; TecTiles, NFC-enabled accessory tags that can change the settings on your phone, and lots of sharing and tagging options in the camera, such as the ability to automatically tag your friends' faces, and the ability for multiple GS3s within a few feet of each other to automatically share all of their photos.

Many of these features work well, but they're almost all buried. The interface is something of a scavenger hunt. Take Smart Stay, a neat new feature which detects your face and keeps the screen from going black while you're looking at it. I love it! But it's not on by default, and the only way to turn it on is by going to the Display area under Settings. S-Beam is similarly buried, under the Wireless menu.

North Korean defectors a hit on TV talent show

Less than a decade ago, Han Seo-hee was a member of an elite, secret music troupe for Kim Jong-il, the iron-fisted late leader of North Korea.

These days, she struggles to make jokes on a South Korean television show, one of roughly a dozen North Korean women who fled their autocratic homeland and now appear on the weekly program that hopes to bring the two nations closer by showing what North Koreans are really thinking about.

"Now on My Way to Meet You," a hybrid talk and talent show shot in Goyang, a city northwest of Seoul, has grown in popularity thanks to its format of humor and tears, mingling serious discussions, such as how the women escaped, with lighter fare such as talk about which men make the best husbands.

"I still feel uncomfortable when I have to make people laugh, or perform. I am still wedded to North Korea's stiff style," said Han, 30, who for four years from 2002 played a stringed instrument as part of Kim Jong-il's troupe.

"I was worried that a lot of malicious comments might be posted (on the show's Internet site)... But when I actually look there, there are a lot of supportive messages, so I think I was right to appear on this show," she added.

Though the show does not skirt heavy topics altogether, gossip and lighter fare dominate.

On one recent show, the women discussed how widespread plastic surgery is in the North -- particularly double-eyelid surgery to make the eyes look rounder, often carried out by eye doctors or unlicensed people -- and how Southern men really know how to sweet-talk a woman who has caught their eye, unlike their serious Northern counterparts.

A debate on the most desirable occupations for a prospective bridegroom concluded that cooks and barbers are most popular, because these are high-salary jobs. By contrast, women in the South generally favor doctors or lawyers.

Comedy skits
Each woman also entertains, some by singing and dancing. Others perform comedy skits, including several who mimic North Korea's iconic, stern-faced female TV newsreader.

But the ending turns sad as the women send video messages to family members back in the North. Everyone in the studio sobs as one woman tells her father, held in a North Korean jail, how she can't forget the way he smiled when she visited.

The show's producer says that not only does it draw attention to little-known aspects of life in the North, it helps connect North and South Koreans, many of whom find it difficult to bridge social and cultural gaps.

Kim Jong Un issues rare public drubbing ? of a roller coaster

Though more than 23,000 North Koreans have made their way south since the 1990s, they find it hard to settle in, ending up in menial jobs and often shunned by their southern brethren.

"We were focusing on families separated by the Korean War 60 years ago and thought we should see about finding other families split for political reasons," said producer Lee Jin-min about the show, which began in December and started featuring the women from April.? "That led us to the North Korean defectors."

With family still left in the North, many of the women were wary about appearing on the show, citing safety concerns. But the show's writers and producers persuaded them that it was an unprecedented chance to change public opinion in their favor.

The emotional public response has taken them by surprise.

One guest, Shin Eun-ha, even has her own fan club.

"I wept for the first time in 10 years, along with my husband," wrote one female viewer. Another said the show had persuaded her and her husband not to divorce.

'Cheerful and animated'
The show also appears to be achieving its goal.

"I thought North Korean women might look gaunt because all of North Korea has been struggling with famine, but when I see them, they are cheerful and animated," said Park Dong-hoon, a 52-year-old man who watched the show on a television at Seoul's main train station.

"I think South and North Korea must be reunited as soon as possible."
