Movie Review: New Take on West Memphis Three Casts Damning ...

Amy Berg?s documentary West of Memphis is the fourth film about the case of the West Memphis Three, three teenage boys whose love of heavy metal and occult curiosity landed them on death row accused of brutally killing three little boys. The prior three films, the Paradise Lost-series by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, introduced the case to America and then tried to advocate for their release. They succeeded in proving the boys? innocence beyond reasonable doubt, but never quite made a convincing-enough case for the culpability of other suspects. Perhaps more significantly, those three movies turned the West Memphis Three into media darlings, winning support from rock stars, actors, and filmmakers who?identified?with their story: loners and social outcast whose?intelligence?and creative disposition put them at odds with their?provincial?small town existence.

What sets Berg?s film apart from these previous films about the 1993 murders and the subsequent conviction of the three teenagers is that it is the product of a years-long private investigation into the crime. Largely funded by Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson, that investigation churned up new DNA, new testimonies, and startling confessional revelations. By the end, we are not merely convinced that the boys should never have been locked up and that they were the victims of collusion and fraud on the part the local police and district attorney, but we also have a pretty good idea who actually perpetrated the crimes.

That should bring satisfaction and closure to the ordeal, but the opposite is true. When the West Memphis Tree were finally released in late 2011, it was do to a legal technicality. According to the State of Arkansas, they are still guilty of the murders and the real killer still roams free. The likelihood of ever retrying the case or putting the murderer on trial is more or less nothing. The boys (now men) are free, but the wheels of justice have not been set right.

There are silver linings. One of the three, Damien Echols, met his wife while in jail. Remarkably, he also educated himself while in prison and is now an incredibly articulate and moving speaker and writer. His intelligence shines in the new film. And the celebrities that were attracted to this story have also helped at least two of the tree boys ease the transition from death row to the rest of their lives.

But a shadow still lingers. We can?t shake the realization that in many ways the camera created this story line, that if no one ever made a movie about the case the wrongfully accused would still be sitting on death row. There is also the uncomfortable realization that it was because these three boys were white rock-and-roll fans that so many celebrities were attracted to the case. Otherwise we would know nothing of their story, just as we know nothing of the countless others still sitting in jail with no hope, their lives stolen by a vicious and gravely flawed judicial system.

Gillmor Gang: The 10 Percent Solution

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang ? Shakespeare, his work, come to life in PBS series

(AP) ? Jeremy Irons has a suggestion for "Downton Abbey" fans: Give William Shakespeare a try, too.

Irons is among the prominent hosts of "Shakespeare Uncovered," an inventive series tracing the origins of eight of the writer's plays through a combination of history, new analysis, selected scenes ? and, for Irons, a gallop on horseback across a fabled battlefield.

The series begins 9 p.m.-11 p.m. EST Friday (check local listings) on PBS, which happens to be the home of the hit period soap opera, "Downton Abbey."

"Shakespeare Uncovered," along with PBS' planned fall airing of new films of four of Shakespeare's plays, "open up to this huge American audience this gold dust," Irons told reporters recently, and demonstrates that TV "doesn't end with 'Downton Abbey.'"

After then mischievously comparing Shakespeare to an Aston Martin and "Downton" to a Ford Fiesta, Irons admitted he hadn't seen the serial and was just having a bit of fun. But he's serious about the Bard of Avon.

"Watch these Shakespeare productions and you'll see what real writing, what real stories, what real characters are about," he said.

The programs also present actor-writer-producer Shakespeare as a 16th-century impresario who knew how to please audiences and exploit his own work by bringing back popular characters and crafting "prequels."

"Shakespeare Uncovered" opens with Ethan Hawke's exploration of "Macbeth," including visits to the play's Scottish sites, a look at recent productions starring Patrick Stewart and Antony Sher, and an illumination of Shakespeare's grasp of the criminal mind.

It's paired with "Shakespeare Uncovered: The Comedies With Joely Richardson," about "Twelfth Night" and "As You Like It."

"Richard II" with Derek Jacobi and "Henry IV" and "Henry V" with Irons air on Feb. 1, with David Tennant's look at "Hamlet" and "The Tempest" with host Trevor Nunn concluding the series on Feb. 8.

There's travel as well as scholarship for the hosts. Irons visits the battlefield at Agincourt in northern France where, in productions of "Henry V," actors get to tear into the famed St. Crispin's Day speech ("We few, we happy few, we band of brothers").

Irons, who will star this fall in PBS' "Great Performances" adaptation of "Henry IV," said he was shooting the film when he was approached by "Shakespeare Uncovered" producer Richard Denton about taking part.

"Oh, that may be interesting if we can find the time. What do you want to do?" Irons recalled asking Denton. "And he said, 'Well, I want to put you in a boat. I want to put you on a horse. I want to take you to Agincourt.'"

"This sounds very interesting," the 64-year-old actor replied, which opened the door to an unexpected education ? and more opportunity for Irons' colorful and unbridled wit.

"I learned, for instance, that the reason we won the Battle of Agincourt is because we had these amazing Welsh archers," while the French, in his words, "wore amazing stuff and great armor and (had) lovely horses, and they pranced around being gorgeous."

Irons' lively approach to the subject matter dovetails with the goal of "Shakespeare Uncovered" as described by producer Denton.

"The real drive (was) to make a series of films that would be entertaining, that would show Shakespeare with the kind of enthusiasm that Jeremy brings to it," Denton said, and would be accessible to those unschooled in the playwright's work.

To please Shakespeare buffs, the programs also include fresh insights into the connection between his life and his art, he said.

The bottom line on the Bard, according to Irons: Shakespeare endures as the greatest dramatist of all because he chronicled the eternal human condition in all its joys and sorrows.

"When we see those plays now, they still speak to us with a resonance that many hundreds of plays written between Shakespeare's time and today don't," he said.

The Business Travel Bad & Ugly? Because There Ain?t Anything Good About It

by Robert Wagner

I?m currently travelling for business reasons. I do this rather often, though fortunately not as much as I used to. I?ve been pretty much everywhere at one time or another and I can honestly say that I?ve yet to be bitten by the ?hey look at me, I travel a lot so I must be important? bug.

I?d rather be at home actually.

That said, I?ve been pondering a few things this trip:

  • How is it that in 2013 there are still airport security personnel that don?t know what a ultrabook, ultraportable laptop, or MacBook Air is and don?t understand that they don?t contain a physical hard drive. And no matter how many times you look at that cool little cheat sheet with the diagram of a 2003 Dell Inspiron, you?re not going to find all of those same parts when you examine my Mac?
  • When will airport security make up its mind whether or not the iPad is or is not a laptop and instruct me to either keep it in my bag or remove it accordingly? I don?t care which way you want to go, just standardize your goddamn rules.
  • How is a small tube of toothpaste any less deadly than a large tube of toothpaste?
  • Why do hotels that refer to themselves as ?resorts? always have scratchier towels and impossibly cheaper bottles of budget brand soap, shampoo, and conditioner?
  • When will I learn to bring my own soap, shampoo, and conditioner?
  • How come my shitting schedule gets thrown out the window simply because I sat on my ass for several hours and got out of my chair in a different time zone? And what is the best way to return it to normal?
  • Why is it legal for powdered eggs to be called eggs at all?
  • Who are these Road Warriors? that are satisfied with only 2 cups of shitty hotel room coffee? Sure, it says it makes 4 cups but that?s only if you?re drinking it out of DIXIE? Brand 3oz. containers.
  • Is my wifi-only iPad mini really going to make the plane crash if I?m reading a book on it during takeoff? If so, I demand that the tree-hating assholes reading paperbacks be required to put their books down during takeoff and landing ??and we should all sit upright and stare straight ahead like the little lemming-zombies you want us to be.
  • Why can?t I pay for the in-flight high school cafeteria quality food with cash? Or, better still, why do you hire flight attendants that can?t be trusted to: a) make correct change, and b) not steal from you.
  • Is there anywhere I can fly directly to from Portland International Airport? I hate stopovers.
  • Why does it seem like half of the females over 30 take business travel way too seriously? The other half are casual and friendly, what the fuck is your excuse for acting like you?re all that ? you?re in economy class, honey, sit down and shut up. No one is impressed.
  • (Continued) Why is it that those same self-important females over 30 act like they haven?t had sex in a decade and try to touch, fondle, flirt with, and fuck every other guy in the room?
  • (Continued) And finally?why do those same women (yes, I?m still on this, sorry) act so put off when you decline their advances? I?m sorry you?re hideous and live a meaningless existence but that?s no excuse to be a fucking asshole to someone just because they don?t want to ?go for a few drinks and see where it leads.? I know exactly where it leads ??and I?m sure a few hundred other men probably do too. Go away. Stay away. Fuck off.
  • Why does the familiarity of McDonald?s seem so goddamn comforting just because I?m away from home? I don?t eat it when I am at home, so why does it remind me of home?
  • The wireless carriers lie ??their coverage is pretty much spotty and shitty everywhere.
  • Why must I always call my bank before I travel so that they don?t shut off my debit and credit cards? Seriously, they should know by now that I travel from time to time ??it?s none of their fucking business when or where.

Bon Voyage, bitches.

Film review: Good action, pokey plot in 'Parker' | The Salt Lake Tribune

This film publicity image released by FilmDistrict shows Jason Statham, left, and Jennifer Lopez in a scene from "Parker." (AP Photo/FilmDistrict, Jack English)

"Parker" delivers what you?d expect when you have Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez on a poster ? he kicks butt, she shakes hers ? but it?s a depressingly static exercise.

Statham plays Parker, the literary creation of the late Donald E. Westlake (under his alter ego Richard Stark), a tough thief with a code that emphasizes no killing of innocent bystanders and no double-crosses. Both happen after a heist at the Ohio State Fair, when his colleagues? mistakes kill a fairgoer and their greed leads them to shoot Parker and leave him for dead.

?

HH

?Parker?

Opens Friday, Jan. 25, at theaters everywhere; rated R for strong violence, language throughout and brief sexual content/nudity; 118 minutes.

He recovers and tracks his former crew to West Palm Beach, Fla., where they are planning a massive diamond heist. Parker wants to pinch the jewels from the thieves while also killing them. He enlists a struggling real-estate agent, Leslie Rodgers (that?s J-Lo), who rationalizes his plan by saying "everybody steals from somebody."

Director Taylor Hackford ("Ray," "An Officer and a Gentleman") provides some glossy images of south Florida excess, but John J. McLaughlin?s script slows the pacing with extraneous characters and a muddled plot.

Statham again proves he?s fine putting the hurt on baddies, but flounders during the movie?s faltering attempts at romance and drama.

AT&T to pay $1.9 billion for Verizon spectrum

NEW YORK (Reuters) - AT&T Inc has inked two deals worth more than $2.68 billion this week as it accelerates its push to expand its wireless spectrum holdings to beef up capacity for high-speed services.

The No 2. U.S. mobile provider said on Friday that it agreed to buy wireless airwaves from Verizon Wireless for $1.9 billion in cash, plus spectrum licenses that it will contribute to Verizon Wireless in five markets.

The Verizon Wireless deal was announced just days after AT&T said it will pay $780 million in cash to buy Atlantic Tele-Network Inc's Alltel wireless business, which includes spectrum and 585,000 customers.

These deals follow 2012, a year in which the company forged a total of 50 spectrum deals that increased its national spectrum holdings by a third, AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson said during the company's quarterly conference call on Thursday.

The operator, which needs to catch up with Verizon Wireless in a high-speed wireless network upgrade, has been seeking smaller spectrum deals since the failure in late 2011 of its $39 billion bid to buy T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG , due to regulatory opposition.

AT&T, Verizon Wireless and their smaller rivals are all looking to bolster their capacity so they can profit from increasing consumer demand for mobile internet services for smartphones, tablet computers and other devices.

Wells Fargo analyst Jennifer Fritzsche said that the deal was positive for both companies and gives AT&T spectrum in important markets such as Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami.

"While on the surface this appears to be a rich price, we would note that the B block licenses that AT&T is acquiring are concentrated in major metropolitan markets," Fritzsche said.

The deals announced this week follow AT&T's August agreement to buy wireless company NextWave Wireless Inc for its spectrum holdings for $50 million and $550 million of debt.

AT&T said the Verizon Wireless licenses it is buying, for airwaves in the 700 megahertz spectrum range, cover a population of 42 million in 18 U.S. states.

It said it expects to close the deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, in the second half of 2013.

Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group Plc , committed to sell a chunk of spectrum last year while it was seeking approval for its agreement to buy spectrum from cable operators.

Apple shares plunge as growth appears to stall

(AP) ? Apple shares plunged Thursday after the company reported quarterly results that point to growth slowing after five blowout years.

The stock was down $53.55 or 10 percent, at $460.46 in midday trading.

Apple Inc. is still the world's most valuable company, a position it's held for more than a year. It's now worth just 3.5 percent more than No. 2 Exxon Mobil Corp, however.

Late Wednesday, Apple reported October-December earnings that were flat compared with the year before. Sales grew 18 percent from the year before, but the startup of production lines for multiple new products like the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini held back profits.

Of more concern to investors is Apple sales growth forecast for the current quarter of around 7 percent ?far from the 50-percent-plus rate it's often hit in recent years. Apple usually lowballs its forecasts, but Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer indicated that it's moving toward providing more realistic figures from now on.

Analysts believe Apple is unable to fully capitalize on the global smartphone boom with just one new ?and very expensive? phone model every year. There has been speculation among company-watchers that Apple may launch a cheaper iPhone, or a premium model with a bigger screen, but CEO Tim Cook put a damper on those rumors in his comments on a conference call following the report.

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013 Barbara

Tax Provisions Affected by Health Care Reform 2013

Information Reporting on Health Insurance Coverage

Large employers must report, on an employee's 2012 W-2, issued in 2013, the
cost of health insurance coverage under an employer-sponsored group health
 plan.

For more information on information reporting on health insurance coverage,
go to IRS Notice 2010-69 <http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-10-69.pdf> or

 rting-Requirements:-Questions-and-Answers> .

Allowable Contributions to Health Flexible Spending Arrangements

Allowable contributions to health FSAs will be capped at $2,500 per year,
effective for tax years beginning after Dec. 31, 2012. On May 31, 2012
 Treasury released Notice 2010-40
 <http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-12-40.pdf> which provides that the
$2,500 annual limitation on contributions to FSA's available through
employer-sponsored cafeteria plans takes effect on January 1, 2013 for
 calendar year plans only.

For more information on allowable contributions to health flexible spending
arrangements, go to the IRS website
 <http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-12-40.pdf> .

 Medical Care Itemized Deduction Threshold

The floor for itemized medical expense deductions will be raised from 7.5%
of AGI to 10%, effective for tax years beginning after Dec. 31, 2012. The
AGI floor for individuals age 65 and older (and their spouses) will remain
 unchanged at 7.5% through 2016.

Additional Hospital Insurance Tax on High-Income Taxpayers

The employee portion of the hospital insurance tax part of FICA, currently
amounting to 1.45% of covered wages, is increased by 0.9% on wages that
exceed a threshold amount. The additional tax is imposed on the combined
wages of both the taxpayer and the taxpayer's spouse, in the case of a joint
return. The threshold amount is $250,000 in the case of a joint return or
surviving spouse, $125,000 in the case of a married individual filing a
separate return, and $200,000 in any other case.

For self-employed taxpayers, the same additional hospital insurance tax
applies to the hospital insurance portion of SECA tax on self-employment
income in excess of the threshold amount.

The provision applies to remuneration received and tax years beginning after
 Dec. 31, 2012.

3.8% Medicare Tax on Net Investment Income

Beginning in 2013, a Medicare tax will, for the first time, be applied to
investment income. A new 3.8% tax will be imposed on a taxpayer's net
investment income - interest, dividends, royalties, rents, passive
activities, and net gains from sales of property not held in a trade or
business - of single taxpayers with AGI above $200,000 and joint filers over
 $250,000.

 UPDATE:
On December 3, 2012, the IRS released proposed regulations
 <https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2012/12/05/2012-29238/net-investme
nt-income-tax> governing the 3.8% net investment income tax imposed under
section 1411. Taxpayers can rely on the proposed regulations until final
regulations take effect. The IRS has also released FAQs
 <http://www.irs.gov/uac/Newsroom/Net-Investment-Income-Tax-FAQs> to assist
taxpayers in understanding the 3.8% tax.

 .9% Medicare Surtax

Beginning in 2013, there will be an additional .9% tax on FICA wages,
compensation, or self-employment income exceeding $250,000 for married
 taxpayers filing jointly, $125,000 for married taxpayers filing separately;
and $200,000 for taxpayers claiming single, head household or qualifying
 widower status.

Employers are responsible for the collection of the tax through withholding
for employees with wages greater than $200,000. The employer will not be
responsible for collecting the tax for taxpayers filing joint returns where
neither spouse earns greater than $200,000 but when their earnings are
combined they total more than $250,000. In these cases, the employee will
be responsible for making the payments by requesting added withholding from
their employers or through estimated tax payments.

 UPDATE:
On November 30, 2012 the IRS and Treasury released proposed regulations
 <http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2012-12-05/pdf/2012-29237.pdf> to help
employers and individuals implement the new tax.

Excise Tax on Medical Device Manufacturers

Beginning in 2013, a tax equal to 2.3% of the sale price will be imposed on
the sale of any taxable medical device by the manufacturer, producer, or
importer of the device. The tax does not apply to individual consumers.

Report the medical device excise tax quarterly on Form 720, Quarterly
Federal Excise Tax Return. The first return is due April 30, 2013 for the
period January through March 2013. The form may be filed electronically or
on paper. The tax is due with the return.

For more information on the excise tax on medical device manufacturers, see
 the IRS website
 <http://www.irs.gov/uac/Medical-Device-Excise-Tax:-Frequently-Asked-Question
 s> .

 UPDATE:
On December 5, 2012 the IRS and Treasury issued final regulations
 <https://s3.amazonaws.com/public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2012-29628.p
df> on the excise tax. The regulations define the term "taxable medical
device" and also provide guidance on the types of items that are excluded
from the tax under the retail exemption. The regulations are effective on
Decembre 7, 2012 and applicable to sales of taxable medical devices after
 December 31, 2012.

In addition to the final regulations, on December 5, 2012, the IRS and
 Treasury also issued Notice 2012-77
 <http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-12-77.pdf> providing interim guidance
regarding the determination of sale price and other issues not addressed in
the final regulations, such as guidance on donated taxable medical devices,
licensing taxable medical devices, and the tax treatment of medical
 convenience kits.

Deductions for Federal Subsidies for Retiree Prescription Plans

Effective in 2013, the rule that the exclusion for subsidy payments is not
taken into account for purposes of determining whether a deduction is
allowable for retiree prescription drug expenses will be eliminated.
Employers that currently receive a federal subsidy for providing retiree
prescription drug coverage (Retiree Drug Subsidy) will no longer be able to
take a deduction for those retiree drug expenses with respect to that
 subsidy as of 2013.

The Retiree Drug Subsidy remains, but employers' ability to deduct the
amount of the subsidy is eliminated. This change increases an employer's
income tax liability, in effect increasing the employer's cost of providing
prescription drug coverage to retirees. The amount by which an employer's
tax liability will increase depends on the total amount of the subsidy and
the employer's applicable corporate tax rate.

RV Blog: Gotta Love Florida!

Well getting my license to sell insurance in Florida was a real lesson in patience but was nothing in comparison to what my clients have been going through trying to establish residency there. Now, if you are just getting a mailing address and registering your RV and or vehicle there, no big deal. Just make sure you set up the insurance in advance so you can take your Florida insurance card to the DMV.

HOWEVER, should you decide to purchase a home or park model in Florida be ready for some interesting hoops to jump through. I recently had long-time SD full-timers purchase a small $15,000 park model in Florida. They carry a SD umbrella policy with me through RLI. I explained that in order to comply with the umbrella requirements, they would need to carry at least $300,000 liability coverage on the park model policy........WELL apparently, that is a BIG DEAL!!! These poor people have had a heck of a time finding an insurance company first to insure the park model as it was older and then second finding anyone who would provide higher than $100,000 liability coverage!!!

They are still going to RV but just wanted a place to go to in the winter and now we find out that it will take an act of Congress to get the insurance they need. After I called RLI to find out what to do, I was told if they couldn't provide the required $300,000 liabllity, then their SD umbrella policy would be cancelled. Finally they had no choice but to give up their SD residency and move it to Florida. RLI only requires $100,000 liability in Florida because they found out no one could buy higher limits there and of course now they really need an umbrella!! That's right, the company made special provisions to insure Florida residents and are charging more than double the price for the umbrella policy. I guess something is better than nothing but word to the wise....picking up that cheap park model may be more of a issue than you would think!!

Finally, I have noticed a fair amount of folks moving out of SD and TX and moving residency to Florida. I am really curious what the advantages could possibly be. If you can provide me some insight on that, I would love to hear from you. An email to me at gina@epic-ins.com would be great as I only come on the blog when I need to vent or inform!! Happy Travels!

Obama in Asheville

James Franco is an actor and writer. He is the author of the poetry chapbook ?Strongest of the Litter? and the short story collection ?Palo Alto.? His poetry collection, ?Directing Herbert White,? is scheduled to be published next year. He received a Best Actor nomination in 2011 for his role in ?127 Hours.?

Obama in Asheville

Asheville, North Carolina, is the birthplace of Thomas
Wolfe and the sometime residence of F. Scott Fitzgerald
When he visited Zelda at her institution;
He stayed at the Grove Park Inn, a grand stone edifice.

On the phone once, Cormac McCarthy lamented
The two added wings and the spa, and marveled
At the original structure, They pulled the stones
From the mountains and brought them down on mules.

Soon after his fortieth birthday, Fitzgerald attempted suicide
Here, but couldn?t shoot his own head, drunk, I guess.
Later, after he was actually dead, from alcohol,
Zelda perished in a fire at her institution, one of nine.

*

Asheville is the place where the Black Mountain College once stood
And helped birth Rauschenberg, Twombly and Johns,
Cage and Cunningham; now I think it?s a Young Men?s Christian Association.
On the wall of the Grove Park, they have pictures of the famous guests;

I?m not up there, but Obama is. I was asked to write something
For the inauguration of his second term, but what could I write?
I was in Asheville, studying writing, but not the political sort;
I write confessions and characters, and that sort of thing.

I wrote my friend Frank about what I could do, but he was unresponsive.
I went to class and then the little burrito place where they know me,
And finally at night I got Frank?s email on my phone and pulled over
On the side of Warren Wilson Road, past the school barn with the WWC --

That I couldn?t see in the dark -- right before the school entrance;
A little spot where there?s a path that leads to a lake called Snake Lake.
First I called my class at UCLA, and told them to watch Apocalypse Now,
And that it used Heart of Darkness as a model, and that we?d watch

Eleanor Coppola?s Hearts of Darkness, the making-of, the following week.
Then I read Frank?s note. He said he was sleeping twenty hours a day,
With no symptoms except that he desired sleep
And just a little more sleep. He?s in his seventies.

Then he said that my poem was a difficult task.
How to write about a man written about endlessly;
A man whom everyone has some sort of experience of;
How to write so that it?s not just for the converted.

*

I met Obama once, in D.C., the Correspondents? Dinner.
I was the guest of Vanity Fair, guided through D.C. by the wife
Of Christopher Hitchens, when he was alive. We went to Hitch?s place,
He had books from floor to ceiling, and said he had read

To Borges, when he was blind, Old Icelandic Eddas?
Then we waited in a private room with the likes of Tom Cruise,
And Katie Holmes, and Claire Danes. When Obama entered
The crowd converged. Finally, I got to shake his hand,

He knew me from Spider-Man. I asked him for advice,
I was scheduled to give the commencement speech at UCLA
And there were some undergraduate knockers against me;
He had been denied the usual honorary degree by Arizona State

Because he hadn?t accomplished enough, so I wondered
How he dealt with detractors. He smiled his smile and said,
?Humor.? Well he?s damn right, and I wonder how much
That stand-up comedian is laughing in the face

Of this big country. Because he is one man and we are many,
And a great servant of the people?he?s a president, not a king?
And doesn?t need to face what King Charles once faced.
(Frank suggested I examine Marvell?s semi-inauguration poem for Cromwell:)

That thence the Royal actor borne
The tragic scaffold might adorn:
???? While round the arme?d bands
???? Did clap their bloody hands.
That most famous stanza, and then:
But bow'd his comely head
Down, as upon a bed.
And he was beheaded, good-bye Charles.

*

If I were to act in the film about Obama,
All I would need to get down, aside from the outer stuff?
And I know that?s important?is his essential kindness,
I?d let the writer put in all the political crap,

And the specific things that he was up against,
All that stuff on CNN and the Huffington Post,
And I?d say the lines that were written, just like Obama
Reads his lines, but what would really put the role over

Would be the goodness at its core.
That?s what will be remembered.
Yes, his race, no one will forget. But the soul too.
I?d win the Academy Award if I just captured that.

NY passes first gun-control law since massacre

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? New York's Assembly on Tuesday easily passed the toughest gun control law in the nation and the first since the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, calling for a tougher assault weapons ban and provisions to try to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill who make threats.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushed hard for the bill, which passed the Senate on Monday night. He is expected to quickly sign the measure into law.

"This is a scourge on society," Cuomo said Monday night, six days after making gun control a centerpiece of his State of the State address. The bipartisan effort was fueled by the Newtown tragedy that took the lives of 20 first graders and six educators. "At what point do you say, 'No more innocent loss of life'?"

The measure, which passed the Assembly 104-43, also calls for restrictions on ammunition and the sale of guns.

"This is not about taking anyone's rights away," said Sen. Jeffrey Klein, a Bronx Democrat, when the bill passed the Senate late Monday night. "It's about a safe society ... today we are setting the mark for the rest of the county to do what's right."

Under current state law, assault weapons are defined by having two "military rifle" features such as folding stock, muzzle flash suppressor or bayonet mount. The proposal reduces that to one feature and includes the popular pistol grip.

Private sales of assault weapons to someone other than an immediate family will be subject to a background check through a dealer. New Yorkers also would be barred from buying assault weapons over the Internet, and failing to safely store a weapon could lead to a misdemeanor charge.

Ammunition magazines will be restricted to seven bullets, from the current 10, and current owners of higher-capacity magazines will have a year to sell them out of state. An owner caught at home with eight or more bullets in a magazine will face a misdemeanor charge.

Another provision places requirements on therapists, psychologists, registered nurses and licensed social workers who believe a mental health patient made a credible threat to use a gun illegally. They would be required to report such a threat to a mental health director, who would have to notify the state. Any registered handguns ? or registered assault weapons purchased before the ban ? could be taken from the patient.

The legislation also increases sentences for gun crimes including the shooting of a first responder that Cuomo called the "Webster provision." Last month in the western New York town of Webster, two firefighters were killed after responding to a fire set by the shooter, who eventually killed himself.

The measure passed the Senate 43-18 on the strength of support from Democrats, many of whom previously sponsored bills that were once blocked by Republicans.

The governor confirmed the proposal, previously worked out in closed session, also mandate a police registry of assault weapons, grandfathering in the estimated 1 million assault weapons already in private hands.

It was agreed upon exactly a month since the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.

"It is well-balanced, it protects the Second Amendment," said Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos of Long Island.

Cuomo said he wanted quick action to avoid a run on assault weapons and ammunition.

Assemblyman Steve Katz said legislators were being "bullied." He said the bill is "solely for the governor's egotistical, misguided notion."

Republicans argued the bill wouldn't stop mass shootings or other gun crimes but instead turns law-abiding into potential criminals.

Republican Assemblyman James Tedisco said the bill was dangerous because it would give people a "false sense of well-being."

"You are using innocent children killed by a mad man for own political agenda," he said. "You are actually making people less safe."

VANCOUVER?After seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts at Vancouver?s Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Friday evening, Max Coppes, the president of the B.C. Cancer Agency, was entirely smitten by the show.

?I actually loved it,? he said during intermission.

?I find that the synchronized movements of the dancers is incredible. I don?t think I have seen people be so in tune with each other. So I am very much enjoying it.?

Based in New York, Shen Yun tours internationally each year with an all-new lineup presenting classical Chinese dance and music.

According to the Shen Yun website, ?Classical Chinese dance is grounded in 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture, and is a dance art form built upon a deep foundation of traditional aesthetics. Classical Chinese dance is rich with expressive power.?

Mr. Coppes said he could see the different emotions being expressed clearly in the dance performances.

    \>");

?They are very well expressed, either force, or elegance, or sweetness. I thought that was an eye-opener.?

He said the show also presents the different cultures that exist within China very well. According to its website, Shen Yun has a mission to revive 5,000 years of the divinely inspired culture of China.

?I think one of the things that we see tonight is the great variation in culture in China,? Mr. Coppes said.

He also praised the use of animated backdrops in the show, saying Shen Yun does a good job of integrating modern technology into its presentation of Chinese classical arts.

?It?s a reflection that this is not just ancient Chinese culture?the choreography is certainly in 2013, and it?s done very cleverly, and very much in tune,? he said.

?When you see it, it actually fits very well, very well done.?

Mr. Coppes? wife Arty also thoroughly enjoyed the show.

?The colours are amazing and the choreography is really incredible,? she said, adding that she enjoyed the music by the Shen Yun Orchestra as well.

With its blend of Western and Chinese instruments, the orchestra expresses both the grandeur of a Western orchestra and ?the distinct sensibilities of China?s 5,000-year-old civilization,? the website says.

Flushing Nemo: Home aquarium species a potential threat to California waters

Well-intentioned children and aquarium hobbyists seeking to ?free? their pet fish down a toilet bowl or into a local waterway may inadvertently be contributing to the threat of invasive species downstream, according to a new report from the University of California, Davis.

In a report released today to the California Ocean Protection Council, lead author Susan Williams, an evolution and ecology professor with the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, found that more than 11 million non-native ornamental marine individuals ? such as tropical fish, seaweed and snails bound for aquariums ? representing at least 102 species are being imported annually through California?s ports of San Francisco and Los Angeles, primarily from Indonesia and the Philippines. And 13 of those species have been introduced to California marine waters ? presumably after being released from aquariums.

While that number is low, the report cautions that 69 percent of the introduced species established themselves successfully in California, signaling a potential threat to marine ecosystems. Some non-native, invasive species can rapidly spread and outcompete native species for food and habitat.

?Although relatively few aquarium species have been introduced compared to species in other pathways, such as ballast water, they are highly successful because they?re grown to be hardy and robust,? Williams said. ?They have to be tough to survive in the trade.?

The aquarium trade represents a $1 billion a year global industry and a popular home hobby, second only to photography, the report said. It has also introduced some of the world?s worst invasive species, such as the seaweed Caulerpa, the ?killer algae? that infected two lagoons in Southern California in 2000 and cost California more than $6 million to eradicate.

Another invader is the highly predatory lionfish, which regularly enters the state?s ports through the aquarium trade ? 20 lionfish were imported into San Francisco International Airport on a single day, the report said. Introduced to Florida in 1999, it spread rapidly throughout the Caribbean Sea and along the East Coast by 2010. Lionfish have not been reported in California waters, but the fish is able to withstand cooler temperatures. If released, a lionfish could establish itself as far north as San Francisco Bay and, even farther, as oceans continue to warm, the report said.

While the report highlighted lionfish and Caulerpa as species of special concern, it identified at least 34 species deemed able to tolerate California?s current marine climate.

The report is one of six that the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory coordinated for the state, each exploring a different vector, or pathway, through which invasive species can enter California ocean waters. The other pathways include aquaculture, live seafood, live bait, fishing vessels and recreation vessels. Williams said it makes sense to focus on invasive threats from the aquarium trade because they can be managed primarily through public education, with minimal regulatory action or expensive measures.

?Unlike some other vectors, we can easily prevent unwanted introductions from the aquarium trade,? she said. ?Aquarium hobbyists can follow some simple practices ? like ?Don?t dump your aquarium? ? to avoid releasing aquarium species into natural water where they can become an expensive and harmful pest.? Williams said that people who no longer want an aquarium species can contact the vendor from which the species came or the California Department of Fish and Wildlife? (formerly called California Department of Fish and Game) to learn how to dispose of or return it responsibly.

For the risk assessment, researchers analyzed state and federal agency databases of non-native species associated with ornamental aquariums, as well as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service inspection records for live animals imported into California ports, and state permit records for restricted species. The researchers also observed a routine, one-day inspection of live organisms arriving in air cargo at San Francisco International Airport for a snapshot view of the inspection process.

The scientists discovered several data limitations: Regulatory agencies do not track the ultimate destination of the aquarium species once they clear customs, so it is unknown how many species stay in California once they arrive.

Both Caulerpa and lionfish are also readily available for sale over the Internet, which presents a data gap for researchers and a regulatory challenge for agencies.

Further, regulatory authority for the trade is fragmented across state and federal agencies, and there is no central source of information on the species, regulations, permits or other relevant records.

?From the hobbyist or industry side, it is really hard to figure out the rules and regulations for holding live organisms in the state ? for importing, possessing and trading them,? said Williams. ?So one of our conclusions is that a more centralized information and permitting system would benefit the regulators, industry and hobbyists, and enable scientists to collect more information and better assess the risk.?

The study was funded by the California Ocean Protection Council and California Ocean Science Trust.

Use These Tips To Improve Your Web Marketing Skills | Rodt St

Monday, January 14th, 2013. Author : Max Cohen. 18 views.

Online marketing allows you to reach a large number of people. Most people surf the web daily. It?s no surprise that the latest generations of people have never even heard of a phone book. Many people don?t even realize they are viewing ads, due to the subtle nature of internet marketing techniques.

When your website is created effectively, it will help you become more visible. This lets people interested in your website have an easier time finding what they?re looking for.

You should back up every claim you make about your niche. People aren?t going to believe you if you say that French course you?re pitching helped improve your French, but they might believe you if you show them a video of you speaking French using examples from the course. This is a good example of why it?s a good idea to only sell products you use yourself.

Even though it is usually stated that you should not mix business with pleasure, this is one of the times that it is acceptable. This is because the pressure is lower and it can be seen as being a hobby that just happens to make you money. You should include your spouse in this activity, too.

TIP! Partner up with other vendors to see if you can offer multiple products from multiple vendors as a bundle. You can link together accounts and make your sales go up.

Services that provide email marketing are easily available and can assist you with website marketing, but it?s always a good idea to try to learn the process yourself. Once you know what to do, you can use mass mailers, build lists and utilize auto-responders for marketing purposes. Besides that, the experience gleaned through the learning process will come in handy down the road.

    Mailing List

It is imperative to use a mailing list that features your clients. Include a place on your website for visitors to request information. Use these emails and the ones you acquire during purchases to compile your mailing list. Once you have the mailing list, you can send out information about sales, promote certain items or even solicit feedback from customers.

Promote your business through other popular sites online. It might cost you a little money and some time, but it?s an investment that will pay off in a huge way. Look for a site that gets lots of traffic, and this can help you get your name out there.

TIP! Let customers comment on your website?s product. People like to research what other consumers are saying about a product they are thinking of purchasing.

Start small when you are first setting out with marketing your product or service on a new website. A few pages that are well done and optimized will do a lot better in the long run, than lots of pages that are put together poorly.

Instead of looking at marketing on the Internet as a career, look at it as a hobby. If you see great levels of success, you may think about making it more of a career, but start with low expectations.

You need to make your site stand out from the competition. Web surfers have so many choices these days when it comes to websites, so you really need to put legitimate energy into developing a site that is unique and engaging. Highlight a service that you provide but your competitors do not; this is a surefire way to grab attention.

Put in some time to develop the web design basics. Use the Internet to find information about CSS and HTML. Try and dedicate 30 minutes a day and in a few weeks you should know some good basics to apply to your webpage.

TIP! It is important that while you are working in internet marketing, you are always aware of what your competition is doing. No matter what business you are in, competition will always be there.

    Star Wars

One of the most promising ways to market your services and products is to identify a profitable niche. For example, if someone is looking for a Star Wars toy, you aren?t going to be able to get them to buy a baseball card. Well, you may, but the point is that someone who wants to buy baseball cards will look in a different area than someone looking for old Star Wars toys. Knowing who is interested in the product you are selling and spending your effort on attracting them to your business is the smart thing to do.

If you want to succeed with Affiliate marketing, it is crucial that you have a quality website. Make sure that your site is easy to read, contains engaging information and answers to questions visitors may have. People will read through your site and visit it often if you post new quality articles every week.

While internet marketing shares similarities with other marketing arenas, there are some differences. As an example, the way search engines focus on title tags could be changed at any time. If this is the case, you may have to put more effort in video marketing to a viral audience.

TIP! Internet Marketing should beget Internet Marketing. Your campaign should be part of a cycle where new customers are always searching for and finding your business and then buying your products.

To really get sales flowing, you need to contact leads in real time. Real-time leads are a good thing; they will guide you to a would be customer right now. You get access to that customer the moment they request information about your products.

Seek out people with credibility in your industry that can provide an interview to your site. Before you publish anything, be certain of getting permission. You don?t want to suffer legal problems. You can type up the transcripts and publish them on E-zine. This is a good way to provide your audience with new content on a regular basis and to get more traffic.

Your website?s content will benefit from the addition of relevant images, because searches will lead to both your text and photos. People who are searching for other things might wind up at your site because they were searching for a particular image. This will make them more familiar with your company and they will return if they like it.

The appearance and performance of your website is just as important as the in-store buying experience. Regularly test your ads, links, graphics, and checkout system for problems that may inconvenience site visitors. Using this technique will generate more traffic because your customers can communicate with one another. This will also keep people interested in your site. Give links for graphics that people can use to advertise membership on your site.

Lost QAWS? Qatar's largest animal shelter given notice to find new home

    With reporting from Alanna Alexander

Uncertainty has been cast on the fate of the Qatar Animal Welfare Society, which has been given until the end of February to find a new home before its lease, on a farm just west of Doha, runs out.

But whether the country?s largest animal shelter will be able to find a new location and move some 300 abandoned animals in that timeframe is anyone?s guess.

QAWS announced the impending move to its Facebook fans on New Year?s eve, thanking the Al Thani family for its generosity over the years and saying it understood the decision. But in the comments, the organization added:

We are still getting over the shock, had been lead to believe the lease would be renewed??.huge task ahead?!!

So far, their search has not yielded any results.

?We are currently in talks with several contacts regarding new locations but with no definite solution so far,? QAWS committee member Kelly Allen told Doha News. She continued:

?Due to the nature of our organization, it?s very difficult to find a suitable site for us to move on to. We are ideally looking for a farm outside of residential areas, but still accessible for volunteers, where we can house over 300 animals safely and without disturbing anyone!

We know we need in the region of 10,000 square meters of land which will enable us to house both the companion and farm animals.?

If QAWS does not find such a place in time, it might come down to dividing the animals up between board members and volunteers and taking care of them in their own homes, QAWS committee member Lucielle Burger said.

    History

QAWS, which is working to register as an official charity in Qatar and currently subsists on volunteers to donate time and money, was founded in 2003.

In 2009, the shelter had to be rebuilt after a fire leveled the entire facility. Now, it once again provides abandoned dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals with food, medical attention and regular care as they await permanent homes. It invites members of the community to take the dogs for a walk or sponsor an animal for QR50 a month.

Meanwhile, some community members are hoping that Qatar will intervene, as the UAE did in 2007 with the Dubai-based k9 Friends. Then, the 20-year-old animal shelter faced eviction, but was gifted land and a purpose-built dog shelter by the government.

However, not many shelters in this part of the world have seen a similar kind of generosity.

For now, like the stray cats and dogs they have rescued for a decade, QAWS will be in search of a home for itself.

    Thoughts?
