If You Want To Pamper Yourself Wear Vintage Lingerie - News ...

If all you've ever worn is modern lingerie you will be absolutely amazed and thrilled when you put on your very first piece of vintage nylon lingerie. The feel of vintage nylon cannot be compared to any other fabric, the smooth body pleasing feel is unequaled. In the world of vintage clothing lingerie is the most intimate category and it is the subject of this article. Today vintage sellers consider clothing through the 1980s to be vintage, not everyone agrees. We will be talking about lingerie from the 1950s through the 1970s. If you are lucky you may find fabulous nylon creations from the 1950s but most of your finds will be from the 1960s and 1970s. It's possible to find nylon lingerie made today but if you compare the quality of the fabric and workmanship of the garment to vintage, the superiority of vintage is unmistakable. We are accustomed to polyester lingerie and some vintage lingerie from the 1960s and 1970s will be polyester. Many of those items came from large chain stores who specialized in inexpensive copies of quality lingerie.

By now you can tell I'm not fond of polyester although polyester with a silk finish does a fairly good job. Silk is not my primary interest in vintage fabric but I find the feel of vintage silk to be absolutely delicious. Rayon is another wonderful vintage fabric but today we focus on vintage nylon lingerie. You will develop favorite vintage fabrics as you familiarize yourself with vintage lingerie using your sense of touch. Of course there is more to learning about vintage lingerie than just the delight of touch. Once you know you want to wear vintage nylon lingerie because of how it feels you will find lots of other reasons to love these treasures from another era. You may end up collecting and wearing only lingerie made by a certain maker from the past. Vanity Fair is one of the most well known but as you do some research you will find there are hundreds of brands, some were small companies only in business for a short time. The major labels are most likely the brands you will encounter. An entire article could be written about vintage labels so I'll only mention a few you will likely come across. Van Raalte is a quality label and almost as well known as Vanity Fair. Other labels you may find are Movie Star, Artemis, Munsingwear, Luxite, Kayser, Gotham Gold Stripe, Barbizon, Kickernick, Wonder Maid, Mojud, Rovel, Val Mode, Seamprufe and Aristocraft. This list is by no means complete, it's just the ones I could think of quickly. The older labels will be embroidered, you can see the threads on the back side of the label, older Vanity Fair labels are a good example. Just like the brand names are a subject too long for an article, so too is a description of labels. The older full slips will have metal adjustor hardware on the straps, newer full slips will have plastic adjustors. In this instance newer could mean anywhere from the late 1960s depending on when a company switched to plastic.

A good garment to begin with is either a slip or a gown because these are readily available. You might want to visit a vintage store so you can learn to recognize vintage lingerie. The label is a good indicater, the older the garment the more likely it will not be a printed label where the letters wash away in time. Speaking of washing, do not ever put vintage lingerie in the washing machine, never never in the washing machine or the dryer. How to care for your lingerie deserves an entire article to properly cover the subject. For now your lingerie will be safe with a quick dip in sudsy water and 2 rinses will keep your vintage lingerie perfect for many years. Drip drying your lingerie will make it smooth and ready to wear with no ironing. Hang your slip or gown on a plastic hanger over the shower head and let it drip dry. Panties or half slips can be dried on a skirt hanger that has plastic clips, if metal touches lingerie you run the risk of rust.

Vintage sizes are not all uniform but then neither is the sizing of modern clothing. For a full slip or nightgown the size usually corresponds to your bra size. If you wear a size 34 bra you would wear a size 34 full slip or gown. Nylon tricot full slips and gowns usually have a built in stretch of approximately 2" so fit is fairly easy. Half slip fit is determined by waist and hip sizes and are sized Small, Medium or Large, usually if the waist fits the hips will fit. Panties today are still sized with the same numbers as vintage but you should know your measurements and carry a cloth tape measure with you when you shop. Most collectibles are just to hang on the wall or set on a table to be admired. Vintage lingerie can be enjoyed every day and will last for years since you know how long it's already been around.

By now I hope you are excited enough to want to know where you can find these marvelous treasures. I would make your first stop a vintage shop and if the salesperson is knowledgeable and talkative you will be in luck. You should also check any thrift stores in your area, some will have actual vintage and you may come across a real find. Searching for vintage lingerie takes some effort but the time is well spent when you find a great garment. I suggest the physical shopping to acquaint you with actual garments but you will also want to do research on the internet. Once you have an idea of quality and condition you will want to try online stores and of course eBay. You need to be wary of any garment you cannot physically see and touch. This is why it's vital you start by going where you can examine actual vintage lingerie. When you buy from a vintage lingerie website choose a site that has been in business online for several years. Read the descriptions carefully, a garment that is described as excellent should not have any flaws. A seller that supplies a lot of information about an item should be presumed to be knowledgeable. Emailing a seller about a specific item is a good way to find out more about the item. The sellers answer will give you an idea of how much you may be valued as a customer.

Many lingerie garments have survived over the years and the information about vintage lingerie is extensive. I hope this short article piques your interest and you take the time to appreciate the beauty and quality of vintage lingerie.

Demos advertising in several GOP Senate primaries

Associated Press

WASHINGTON ? Democrats have their thumbs on Republican scales in Senate primaries in Missouri and Wisconsin this summer, hoping to improve their own chances of maintaining a majority in November.

The idea isn't quite as far-fetched as it might sound.

Two years ago, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's allies invested heavily in an effort to help Sharron Angle win a contested GOP primary in Nevada after deciding she would be the easiest Republican to defeat in the fall. She won the nomination, but ultimately lost to Reid.

Now Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri is running a series of television advertisements that strategists in both parties say indicates a preference for Rep. Todd Akin over primary rivals John Brunner and Sarah Steelman.

At the same time, Majority PAC, a group with ties to Reid, has run television commercials selectively attacking Republican contenders in Missouri and Wisconsin, where primaries are set for next month.

At first glance, each of the three ads run by McCaskill's campaign appears to be an attack, one at each of her potential rivals.

Yet one calls Akin "too conservative" to be a senator and says he once referred to President Barack Obama as a "complete menace to our civilization" ? characteristics that seem more likely to appeal to Republican primary voters than to repulse them.

In a brief interview in the Capitol, McCaskill said she decided to advertise before the primary because she has been attacked heavily by Republican outside groups and didn't want to wait any longer before telling voters "how extremist, how flawed" the GOP field is.

She sidestepped when asked if she has a preferred opponent, saying they were "three of a kind, one and the same."

Republicans as well as some Democrats said the ad relating to Akin was running more often than the others, and one GOP official, citing detailed advertising information, said it was shown about five times for each airing of the others.

McCaskill's campaign declined to discuss the issue, except to say that all ads are airing statewide.

Democrats now hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, including the support of two independents. Republicans must gain four seats this fall to be assured of winning control, although a pickup of three would be sufficient if Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney defeats Obama.

Intelligent Cancer-Fighting Skin Lotion ? prescouter.com

?Image:massnewsmedia.com

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, ILLINOIS, USA. A gene-altering lotion has been developed with the help of nanoparticles. Genetic therapy in the near future could be as easy as applying a lotion on your skin. It works by soaking nanoscale compounds through your epidermis to alter your DNA. According to some researchers from the International Institute for Nanotechnology in Northwestern University, the new class of nucleic acid structures can help protect your skin from skin cancer.

Human skin tends to dry out and even burn under the summer sun. However, it is still a very tough barrier which keeps away different kinds of invaders from entering our body. There are so many different skin lotions available in the market that can be used to help target some skin disorders. However, it cannot go as deep as it should.

Chad Mirkin, PhD, professor of chemistry and his group of researchers discovered that spherical nucleic acid (SNA) nanoparticles can actually be used for effective gene regulation and can actually enter cells easily. Amy Paller, MD, chair of dermatology was the one who encourage Dr. Mirkin to adapt his research to skin application.

With this technology, we are talking about structures of nucleic acids which is about 1,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair each. They are capable of binding to natural proteins which enable them to go through the skin and enter the cells. Once they are inside the cells, they can turn off the disease-causing genes in a selective manner. The best part about it is that acid agglomerates can easily recognize the healthy genes from the mutant genes.

Some Recent Court Cases involving Homeschooling ...

From time to time I like to provide a brief summary of some recent court cases relative to homeschooling.? Today I?m stressing only those decided by a court of appeals or higher, not district court decisions. We?ll begin with a couple of special education decisions that together say something important about homeschooling children with special needs. Then we?ll move on to the more unseemly stuff.

Special Education

T.B. by W.B. and J.B. v. St. Joseph School District?was decided by the 8th Circuit Court in late April of 2012.? Read the full decision, which includes a comprehensive summary of the facts of the case, here.? Bottom line is that parents of special needs kids who provide home-based education need to show explicitly how their home-based program is meeting the child?s IEP if they want the school district to reimburse them for expenses.? The family in this case did not provide an education appropriate to their child?s needs, and so when they sued to have the school reimburse their expenses, they lost, both at the district level and on appeal.

Matter of Andes Cent. School Dist. v. King was decided by the New York Supreme Court in April 2012.? Here again the parents sued their school district when it refused to reimburse them for transportation to and from their child?s special education services, which the child took in addition to being homeschooled.? The New York State Education Department agreed with the parents but the School District appealed, stating that transportation wasn?t special education.? But it is, as both federal and state law clearly say, so the State Supreme Court sided with the parents.? Read the details here.? To me the significance of these two cases combined is that homeschooling parents with children with special needs should make sure that they are compliant with all laws and try to work with rather than against special education service providers.? When proper procedures are followed, as was the case here, the parents will win in court if a school district doesn?t want to play along.? But when the parents try to do it maverick style, as with the prior case, the courts will not likely be friendly.

Unseemly Stuff

It must be said over and over that it?s important not to generalize about the entire homeschooling movement based cases like these.? By definition situations that make it into court are atypical.? But having said that, such cases do help explain why so many Americans who do not homeschool look at those who do with suspicion.

People v. Goddard was decided by the California Court of Appeals in June of 2012.? The facts of the case are very sobering.? They detail the years-long sexual abuse of an adopted girl by the husband of the girl?s stepsister.? The abuse was able to go on so consistently for so long because the girl was homeschooled, and the husband was frequently left alone in the house with the girl while the stepsister was at work.? Goddard was convicted of several counts of sexual abuse of a minor.? You can read it all here.

Titus v. Titus, Decided in April of 2012 by the Nebraska Court of Appeals, is an interesting case largely because of who it features.? Phyllis Titus is very well known in the Nebraska homeschooling world, having served for several years as the point person for the Home Educators Network, a leading regional organization.? She?s been scrubbed from the site?s actual pages, but you can still find her name all over the internet from years past.? Anyway, The Tituses divorced, and Mr. Titus appealed the original decision because he thought he was having to pay too much alimony.? The court of appeals confirmed the earlier decision, citing among other things the years and years of sacrifice Mrs. Titus gave to her earning potential so that she could homeschool the couple?s two children, which both parents had always wanted her to do.? The former Mrs. Titus now can benefit financially from all those years of service.

Bowen v. Bowen, decided by the Arkansas Court of Appeals in June of 2012, is interesting mostly for the wild homeschooling set-up it divulges.? The case is really about whether grandparents have a right to see their grandchildren if a parent doesn?t want them to, but what prompted the trouble between paternal grandparents and father was a divorce followed by a decision to homeschool.? From the facts of the case, which you can read here, a husband and wife divorced, which led the husband?s father to fire his son from the family business.? This led the father to stop allowing the grandparents to visit the house, so they saw their grandkids during lunch at school.? But eventually the husband?s new wife and his ex-wife, decided to homeschool the children.? The grandparents sued to get visitation rights, which the lower court granted.? But the court of appeals reversed the decision, saying that in such cases a parent?s wishes take priority unless a very high threshold is cleared, and the grandparents didn?t clear it.? I include the case here only because it is the first example I?ve ever come across of a homeschooling situation where a divorced biological mother and the step mother who replaced her homeschool children together.

Finally, we have In re C. S. et al., decided by the California Court of Appeals in April of 2012.? It?s the kind of custody case nobody wants to hear about, for it involves the use of ?homeschooling? to mask neglect and abuse.? If you want the details you can read them here.? Bottom line is that cases like this, and there are many, need to be kept in mind by homeschoolers like David Mills, who recently expressed in the fine journal First Things his exasperation with the skepticism with which his decision to homeschool is often greeted by outsiders.? One reason so many people are skeptical is that not all homeschoolers behave like David Mills.

Microsoft Announces New Mice And Keyboards Designed Specifically For Windows 8

Advertisements

In anticipation of the final public release of their new all-singing all-dancing Windows 8 operating system, Microsoft has been hard at work behind the scenes deploying their engineering teams into projects that have resulted in the announcement and launch of a range of new mice and keyboards that have been designed to make using Windows 8 a lot easier. The Redmond company have called on all of their thirty plus years experience to create hardware which they hope will allow users to get the most out of their new OS and take advantage of everything it provides.

As part of the announcement, Microsoft have informed the public that the new hardware will be available ?soon? via the Microsoft online store as well as the official retail channels and other registered Microsoft dealers. Even though Microsoft have high hopes from Windows 8, they obviously also recognize that success is no longer as simple as pumping out a decent version of Windows with more users appreciating the seamless integration of hardware and software which companies like Apple provide. To truly capture the imagination of PC owners, they have acted in the perfect way by creating and announcing this exciting range of mice and keyboards.

6378.DSC03815_606C036D

Excited users can expect to see two new keyboards hitting the market place when the release switch is eventually flipped, as well as two new corresponding mice that are intended to work as a set. A timely update to their existing Touch Mouse product is also on the cards to bring additional functionality and compatibly with the new Windows 8 software.

The new Wedge Touch Mouse is designed around what Microsoft is calling an ultra compact frame and is predominantly intended to be used in conjunction with a mobile device. With built-in four-way touch scrolling, the product is a perfect example of a functional and highly feature rich mouse for use on the move. The fact that it is Bluetooth enabled means that it will work with any Bluetooth compatible laptop, computer or tablet and remains entirely free from wires. Microsoft have also incorporated BlueTrack technology into the Wedge Touch Mouse as well as a feature that enables the mouse to power cycle in conjunction with the connected machine for battery preservation. When released, the Wedge Touch Mouse will retail for around the $70 mark.

In contrast to the Wedge Touch Keyboard, the new Sculpt Mobile Keyboard brings a more familiar full keyboard type offering but manages to maintain mobility at the same time. The ergonomic design makes it look and feel beautiful with built-in Bluetooth and weighing marginally more than just one pound. Battery saving features enable the keyboard to sleep after detecting no activity, with a simple button tap being enough to wake it up. The Sculpt Touch Mouse is an attempt to bring it all to a mouse experience. Portability and comfort compliment a four-way touch scroll strip, allowing power of navigation of apps and documents, and making it a perfect companion for the new Windows 8 Metro stylings. The Sculpt Mobile Keyboard and Touch Mouse will both be priced at $49.95 when launched.

Zimbabwe PM's party backs draft consitution: spokesman

The party of Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai pushed on Saturday for approval of a disputed draft constitution needed for new elections, calling it "the best document" possible.

A spokesman for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Douglas Mwonzora, said that if the draft was looked at objectively, "one will come to the unescapable conclusion that it is the best document so far since 1896."

That date marks the colonisation of the country which was initially known as Rhodesia.

A new constitution, which is to be put to a public referendum, is one of Zimbabwe's main reforms ahead of elections to replace an uneasy coalition formed by President Robert Mugabe and Tsvangirai three years ago.

The coalition was designed to prevent the country from tipping into wider conflict in the aftermath of a bloody presidential election.

European Union officials have said they would lift most sanctions imposed against Zimbabwe a decade ago once the country has held a "credible" vote on a new constitution.

Mwonzora said his party's officials were satisfied with the draft and had agreed to support the document, which was completed last week by negotiators from the country's two man political parties.

Some analysts have criticised the document as a flawed compromise which will not have any effect, however.

The proposed constitution would curtail presidential powers and impose a two-term limit of 10 years. Mugabe has been in power since Zimbabwe's 1980 independence.

It would also strip the president of immunity from prosecution once he leaves office, a major concern for Mugabe who fears being hauled to court over human rights abuses.

Following a long debate on allowing same-sex marriage and ending capital punishment, the draft defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman and maintains the death penalty except for women and people aged 70 or older.

It provides for citizenship by birth, descent or registration but does not allow dual citizenship.

The draft also foresees compensation for white farmers who were forced off their land by Mugabe's controversial land reforms and protects the property rights of the new farmers.

Ivory Coast leader foresees Mali intervention soon

PARIS (AP) ? The leader of West Africa's regional bloc said in an interview published Sunday that military intervention in Mali is "inevitable" within weeks, if there's no quick change in the nation where Islamist extremists rule the north.

Alassane Ouattara, who also is the president of Ivory Coast, told the French weekly Le Journal du Dimanche that half the intervention force would be made up of Malien soldiers and would likely include soldiers from Niger, Nigeria and perhaps countries such as Chad ? with logistical help from France and the United States. He defined logistical help as material support and counselors but added that combat aircraft are needed.

"If the situation doesn't evolve favorably and rapidly, yes, there will be a military intervention in Mali," he said. "It seems inevitable." He added, "I think we can talk in weeks, not in months. There is urgency."

Ouattara serves as the head of the West African regional bloc known as ECOWAS, which secured Mali's consent for an intervention at a meeting last week in Ivory Coast of West African military chiefs of staff to discuss intervention. There is agreement on a force of nearly 3,300, with an initial deployment of police and gendarmes followed by soldiers, he said.

Ethnic Tuareg rebels took control of Mali's vast north after a coup in March, but the Tuaregs have since been driven out by Islamist rebels who want to impose a strict version of Islamic law. An estimated 300,000 people have fled the region as al-Qaida linked groups impose their rule.

The proposal for the intervention force would need approval from the U.N. Security Council, which France leads starting Wednesday. Ouattara just ended a visit to Paris and a meeting with President Francois Hollande, and suggested in the interview that the French presidency would facilitate passage of a resolution.

France appears to be preparing the diplomatic groundwork for a possible intervention. Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius was completing a tour of capitals in the region from Niger to Chad.

In the United States, Michael Sheehan, the Defense Department's assistant secretary for special operations, said Thursday at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado that "all options would be considered for what is a looming threat" and that discussions with France and Britain are under way. The United States has held special training missions in the past in Mali to counter the presence in nations of the Sahel of al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, an Algeria-born affiliate of the terror network.

The Ivory Coast leader said in the newspaper interview that he does not foresee the use of any non-African ground troops in a Mali intervention.

Mali moved toward turmoil with a coup in March led by Capt. Amadou Sanogo that ousted the democratically-elected government. An interim president, Dioncounda Traore, was appointed in April, but was attacked and injured by supporters of Sanogo. Traore returned only Friday to his homeland after medical care in Paris.

France, like other nations, hopes Traore's return will set the stage for formation of a national unity government, considered the top priority.

With the Olympics starting, Friday provided a perfect opportunity for Congress to renew pressure on the NFL and NFLPA regarding the ongoing absence of HGH testing, a standard component of Olympic drug testing.

Four members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce (two from each party) sent a letter Friday to Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith urging them to implement last year?s agreement to conduct HGH testing.

?Without HGH testing, the performance enhancing drug provisions in your collective bargaining agreement will not be able to effectively deter the use of this drug,? the letter from Fred Upton (R-Mich.), Henry Waxman (D-Cal.), Mary Bono Mack (R-Cal.), and G.K. Butterfield? (D-N.C.) states.? ?And this failure sends a terrible message to young athletes and fans that player safety and a level playing field are not priorities.?

The letter explains that Congress ?has been reluctant to engage more deeply in this matter, believing this is a problem best solved by allowing labor and management to follow through on their agreement.?? But with no specific threat/promise to intervene, the NFL and NFLPA can continue to drag their feet.

And while it?s widely perceived that the NFLPA has delayed the process by insisting on a population study to account for the physiological differences between football players and Olympic athletes generally, the league hasn?t done much if anything to force the NFLPA to honor it?s written commitment to submit to testing.? Frankly, it?s almost as if the league is content not to push forward with testing, as long as it?s the union and not the league that gets the bulk of the blame.

If, after all, the HGH problem is worse than believed, many players will be subject to suspension.? Perhaps more importantly, if players who are using HGH to recover from injuries suddenly must stop, then they won?t recover from injuries as quickly and the teams will have a harder time putting a product on the field.

Regardless of the reasons, something doesn?t seem right.? If the NFLPA is dragging its feet, the NFL has remedies at its disposal to push the issue forward, whether under the CBA or before the National Labor Relations Board of even in court.? But the NFL to date hasn?t used them.

For now, the league has responded to the letter with a promise to respond later.? ?We appreciate and share the concern of the committee,? the league said in a statement, ?and will respond to the letter as soon as possible.?

That?s not really much of a response.

Thus, if Congress wants to see HGH testing in the NFL, it?s time to stop huffing and puffing and time to start holding hearings and putting people under oath and finding out how deep this rabbit hole goes and why the NFL and NFLPA apparently aren?t interested in plugging it up.

Apple U.K. doesn't have to post apology to Samsung... yet

Though a U.K. court recently ordered Apple to post a statement on the web and in papers saying Samsung's Galaxy Tab line didn't copy the iPad design, it seems Apple doesn't have to do that, at least not just yet. According to Jeremy Hodges, reporting for Reuters:

Cupertino, California-based Apple appealed saying it didn?t want to advertise for its rival. The order is stayed until its appeal against the ruling is heard in October.

This follows the judge in the trial saying Samsung's Galaxy Tab "wasn't cool enough" to be confused with an iPad. Though, apparently, some Best Buy shoppers don't have their cool-dar as finely tuned...

(There's still time for you to get into in on our help write an Apple apology to Samsung contest -- so head on over!")

Smoking bans: Tobacco-free college campuses on rise in US

Many US college campuses are becoming tobacco-free as US schools institute total bans, indoors and out, on cigarettes and related products. Some smokers say the bans infringe on their choices. ? ?

At a growing number of campuses nationwide, total bans on cigarettes and other tobacco products are showing up, barring students from lighting up anywhere on school grounds ? even in the open air.

The most recent school system to snuff out campus tobacco was the Ohio public college system when the Board of Regents on Monday recommended an all-out prohibition on tobacco products. In June, the University System of Maryland announced its?12?institutions,?inside and out, would go smoke-free by next July. Come September, the use and advertising of tobacco will be forbidden anywhere at schools within the City University of New York system.

Between January 2011 and this January, the number of US colleges?and universities?with total smoking bans rose from 466 to 648, according to the group Americans for Nonsmokers? Rights. Already this year, 126 schools have moved forward with smoke-free policies that apply to all areas of campus.

?We hear from colleges they?re there to educate and raise the next generation of leaders, and that it?s the responsible thing to do,? says Bronson Frick, associate director of Americans for Nonsmokers? Rights, based in Berkeley, Calif.

Some colleges have never allowed smoking for religious reasons. But about a decade ago, some that permitted it began to impose bans on indoor smoking that also governed ? coinciding with similar workplace laws ? how far from entrances smokers had to be. The concept of the smoke-free campus, which prohibits smoking even outside, marks the trend?s latest evolution.

In total, about 770 colleges are now smoke-free, according to Americans for Nonsmokers? Rights. Some take that policy a step further by forbidding all forms of tobacco, including chewing tobacco. Because the organization relies on self-reported information, the actual number is probably higher, Mr. Frick says.

While exact data remains murky, one-third to one-half of colleges nationwide have likely implemented a policy or are weighing the option, says Ty Patterson, executive director of the National Center for Tobacco Policy, based in Springfield, Mo.

Policies barring smoking and tobacco have reached a ?near tipping point,? says Mr. Patterson, who as the vice president of student affairs instituted one of the first smoke-free campuses in the country, at Ozarks Technical Community College in 2003.

The smoke-free movement on college campuses received a major boost in 2006 when a report by the US Surgeon General flagged secondhand smoke as risky at any exposure level, Patterson says.

The bans have not been without controversy, especially from smokers? rights groups.?

Reddit as a Science Outreach Tool | The Yale Forum on Climate ...

Tony Barnston, a climate scientist at Columbia University?s International Research Institute for Climate and Society, engages with the broad public through Reddit, a social news site. ?I would like to do another,? he says.

What do astrophyscist Neil Degrasse Tyson, Congressman Daryl Issa (R-Calif.), and fomer Man Vs. Wild host Bear Grylls have in common?

They?ve all let strangers ask them anything on Reddit, a social news website. Climate scientist Tony Barnston of Columbia University?s International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) also recently tested the ?Ask Me Anything? waters and found them to his liking.

The experience turned out to be enlightening not only for the Reddit community, but also for Barnston, who discovered a new opportunity to talk shop about climate in an informal setting. His experience may provide lessons for other climate scientists looking to engage the public about their work.

What exactly is Reddit?

Reddit has been referred to as ?an Internet firehose? because of the massive amount of information that regularly moves through the site. Users generate all of that information, as they do on Facebook and Twitter, but there are some big differences. For one, most users are anonymous. For another, rather than following specific users ? though they can do that ? most users manage that firehose of information through ?subreddits,? in effect communities where users post on specific topics.

Nearly 1.5 million users post on Reddit daily in one of some 144,000 subreddits. Of those 144,000 subreddits, one of the most active is ?IAmA.? That?s where users with interesting stories can share their insights and also participate in an ?Ask Me Anything? or AMA. An AMA is basically what it sounds like: users pose questions, usually germane to the original poster?s background, and the original poster answers them.

To further turn the firehose of information into a manageable stream, users can up-vote or down-vote questions. As a result, for users sorting the queue of questions by popularity, the cream generally rises to the top and the most off-topic questions end up at the bottom.

Testing Crowd-Sourcing in the Reddit Waters

Having a climate scientist participate in an AMA came at the initiative of Arif Noori, the assistant Web director at Columbia University?s Earth Institute, which houses IRI.

?It was because of the community, the simplicity, and the instantaneous nature of these threads on Reddit that we decided to try it out,? Noori explained in an e-mail. ?There?s something interesting about the crowd-sourced nature of voting certain questions to the top. You don?t have that on Twitter or Facebook.?

Noori also cited as another reason that a Reddit climate science AMA made sense: the ?sizeable community of Redditors interested in science topics.? In fact, the science subreddit is the sixth most-subscribed subreddit?on the entire site, still?another reason that a climate science AMA made sense.

A few days prior to the session, Noori reached out to IAmA moderators to help promote Barnston?s AMA. ?I was afraid we wouldn?t get any traction since there were two other AMAs happening that day ? A journalist who just returned from an Al-Qaeda stronghold in Yemen and an actor who played Shaggy in Scooby-Doo,? Noori said.

Despite competing with current events and pop culture, Barnston?s Reddit still had a great turnout. There were more than 200 comments and questions posted to his AMA. ?I couldn?t answer them all. There were too many,? Barnston said later in an interview in his office.

Barnston took cues from Reddit users in deciding which questions to answer first. ?I focused more on the top ones that had more points, that were more popular,? he said.

At the same time, he also wanted to play to his strengths in modeling and data. ?I did read the ones on the bottom half, and a few of them were so up my alley that I wanted to answer them. Things about data were unpopular, but that was a topic I could relate to.?

By answering both the popular questions and ones more in tune with his own interests, Barnston was able to keep users following along and himself interested and involved.

Why It Worked ? Time to Organize Your Thoughts, Your Response

Aside from the benefits Noori had anticipated, Barnston saw one other major benefit of doing a Reddit AMA that could appeal to scientists perhaps feeling some anxiety about engaging with the public. ?I liked having time to think of my answer. Look at my office, that?s what my mind looks like,? Barnston quipped.

His office is actually representative of lots of scientists? minds. The shelves are filled with statistical analyses and earth science books, printouts of academic journal articles are scattered on the desk, and climate model outputs, sea surface temperature maps, and manilla folders are piled ? albeit quite neatly ? on the floor. In short, there?s a wealth of information, but it can take awhile to remember where it is stashed.

And while he didn?t have to dig too deep to answer some questions such as one about differences between La Ni?a and El Ni?o, others were more complex. In an interview on the Earth Institute?s ?State of the Planet? blog, Barnston noted some questions ?could easily have been asked by a colleague.? For example, one questioner asked about the interaction between El Ni?o, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the Atlantic Meridional Oscillation.

Perhaps not surprisingly, one of the hottest topics of the AMA was climate change. That?s where Barnston balked a bit. Of all the topics, climate change sparked the most discussion and debate among Reddit users themselves. While the exchanges remained civil for the most part, Barnston worried that his answers could get misconstrued as policy statements or could be taken out of context.

He had to be cautious about where to draw the line, for example, when answering a question about what short-term effect of climate change people should be most worried about. Barnston cited sea-level rise impacts on coastal communities as the largest short-term threat. He also pointed to the propensity of communities to continue building on low-lying land as a cause for concern. However, he managed to stop himself short of offering a climate change policy solution and shied-away from development issues because neither subject falls within his area of expertise.

Barnston worried also about what headlines could look like on climate ?skeptic? websites. Given that his affiliation with Columbia was presented up front and used to lend credibility to his responses, he realized his answers could also reflect on the university and on the climate research going on there. In other words, his words, no matter how well-intended and carefully stated, might somehow be used to disparage his credibility and that of the university. (In this respect, the long-lasting ripple effects from the stolen climate scientist e-mails at the University of East Anglia in 2009 are never far from one?s mind.)

What?s Next? ?More Scientists on Reddit?

?Overall, I enjoyed doing it and would like to do another,? Barnston said, reflecting on the experience.

Noori says he hopes to see more scientists on Reddit, too and thinks tying an AMA to a climate or earth science current event could be key: ?I think it?s a good idea if scientists would make themselves available for when there is something newsworthy going on ? for example, a seismologist AMA after an earthquake.?

With the Climate Prediction Center recently issuing an El Ni?o Watch, August or September might be an ideal time for Barnston to head back to the IAmA subreddit. By then, climatologists should have a clearer idea of whether an El Ni?o will develop and what its strength might be. That and other coming events no doubt will continue to provide an ?in? for Reddit users to engage even more with climate science.

So You Want to Reddit ?

?I would encourage other scientists to give it a try,? Barnston said regarding a Reddit AMA. If you?re ready to take the AMA plunge, here are a few guidelines to get you started.

Some Things to Do

1.??DO provide proof of your qualifications. You can be anyone on Reddit, which is great if you want to be an anonymous commenter. But if you want to do an AMA, be ready to provide proof. That means a tweet or a press release saying you?ll be on Reddit or verifying your identity with the moderators prior to the AMA.

2.??DO be unique. IAmA moderators promote AMAs with different angles. If you want them to promote your AMA, show what?s special about your line of research whether it be the topic, the places you travel to, or new findings that move the field forward.

3.??DO make sure you have time. With over 200 questions to choose from, responding to even the best can be time-consuming. Barnston spent the better part of a workday answering questions. Be prepared to make a commitment.

And Some Things to Avoid

1.??DON?T feel the need to answer everyone. While most questions were thoughtful during Barnston?s AMA, some were frivolous. Don?t feel the need to answer ones that are off-topic or seem out of bounds.

2.??DON?T be nervous. Most Redditors are anonymous, but that doesn?t mean they?re hostile. Reading through Barnston?s Reddit, many users said thanks when they asked their question, and 99 percent of the discourse was extremely civil. As Barnston noted, some users could even be colleagues!

3.??DON?T be afraid to move on. If a commenter keeps asking off-topic or hostile questions, just skip over them. There were so many serious questions during Barnston?s AMA, he couldn?t get through all of them. Don?t waste your time with dead-end questions.

like one should spend dollars and not save them but why silver and gold in particular over other material assets?

Well when SHTF does happen and America becomes a third world country for several decades (I don't understand why people just assume we are going to recover in the matter of days, I think it'll be several years) your going to have spend all your gold and silver because all your currency will be worthless. Once your gold and silver dries up and you lost your job that you will probably never reclaim for some time, what are you going to do?

I think perhaps investing in land might be the best idea and start farming. One thing that people will always need, when nobody has jobs, when their currencies are worthless and it costs a thousand dollars to buy a loaf of bread is food. I think one should invest in production assets that allow you to produce things that people will need no matter in what condition the economy is in. If I buy 1000 oz of silver, when shtf i'll still have 1000 oz of silver and no production method to produce more and will eventually have to spend it because i'll have no job to buy food and will most likely not have the ability to buy more silver and gold because i'll have no job and will be to worried about buying other things like food, oil, toilet paper, things that I actually need and will most likely not have money just sitting around to invest in.

yay food

I think investing in production assets is the best way to go so that way I can get a real return on my investment. If I bought a cow and it had a baby I would get a real return (another cow) whose value could go up and down based off of how much our currency is actually worth, but at the end of the day I have another cow no matter what, and a way to produce more if I needed to spend it.

I think simply stockpile up on food is a bad idea as food eventually goes bad, and one should invest in ways to produce food.

why gold and silver and not TP?

its just the way they did it from the begging of time... before TP was even invented.

our ancestors went to gold and silver for not just its MONETARY purpose. it was used in building many things back then as well: temples, silverware, cups, vases, armor, jewelry....

at the time there was NOTHING ELSE....

gold and silver have just recently become COMMODITIES, in terms of what they are TODAY. back THEN, 200-2000+ years ago, it was THE standard of wealth and trade.

before that you did use things such as fur skins, weapons, etc.. the indians...

the way things are looking I wouldnt be surprised if the US GOV went to TP as a form of currency...

If you go back and read many of the archived posts, many of us have said all along that survival hoarding should be first! You need a supply of food(many of the freeze-dried kinds have a 20-25 year shelf-life)no debt, water, firearms and ammo and whatever you need to survive,THEN look at precious metals as a way to preserve your wealth against the currency collapse. PM's are a strategy for having something coming out the other side of a collapse. Some folks are pouring all of their extra cash into PMs without taking care of the"survival" needs. Personally,I have no debt,an 18 month supply of food,4 guns with ammo(I probably need more ammo than I have)for protection and for food acquisition. I even have a hoard of toilet paper. I will keep a small amount of cash on hand for essentials AND 11 ozs. of gold and 160 ozs. of silver. So,I agree with your premise, gold and silver will probably not be all that useful in a currency collapse, but it will make your life a whole lot better when a new economy is established.

The thing most people miss when talking about gold and silver when considering it against inflation/collapse/etc is;

You cannot value it in dollars!

Value it in any other commodity that has value regardless of the "dollar amount" slapped on to it.

Man hours worked
ounces of gold/silver
Gallons of milk
Population

Dollar values only tie together relative worth of two goods/services, so things that are traded in dollars should be compared with their dollar value stripped.

If a gallon of milk costs me $3.50
And an ounce of gold costs me $1,650
The value ratio is 471:1

If milk goes up to $6.50
and gold only increases just a bit to $1,700
the value ratio changes to 261:1

Even though gold went up in "price" it went down in value against Milk.

How about against population? This is one of my favorites.

Currently, there is roughly 7.02B people on the planet. Lets say there is 30,623 tonnes of gold above ground (taken from wikipedia)

In ounces that's around 984,552,305 ozt, or a ratio of 7.13/ozt Au : 1 person

Let say over the next 10 years we add 700M people, and 200M ounces troy of gold.

Now we are at a ratio of 6.5/ozt Au : 1 Person.

The value of gold just went up against the population. Doesn't matter what gold did in dollars.

This is all my opinions/thought's, please don't take it as 100% fact, confirm things for yourself, make your own investments.

For though, I'll be holding for quite some time.
