The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The Plastic Surgery Foundation (PSF) have partnered with the Center for Restorative Breast Surgery (CRBS) and the singer/songwriter Jewel to promote awareness of breast reconstruction options after mastectomy. BRA Day USA will be on October 17, 2012.
For some women, treatment of breast cancer involves a single or double mastectomy (removal of one or both breasts). In order to restore the appearance of a breast, women may choose to undergo breast reconstruction after their mastectomy. Research suggests that immediate breast reconstruction can improve psychological wellbeing.
Despite the benefits of breast reconstruction, some research shows that less than 25 percent of women undergo immediate breast reconstruction and nearly 70 percent are unaware of their reconstruction options.[1]
On October 17, 2012, the United States and 20 other countries will join together for BRA Day to promote education, awareness and access regarding breast reconstruction following breast cancer surgery. The CRBS is a national medical sponsor of the event and will take a leading role in the campaign to help support women to physically, mentally, and emotionally thrive after breast cancer.
As part of the campaign, Jewel, a Grammy-nominated musician, bestselling author, and humanitarian, will serve as the national spokesperson. Her role will include media appearances, public service announcements, and a dedicated BRA Day USA song and benefit concert event.
BRA Day USA is designed to raise awareness and help women understand their options and rights regarding breast reconstruction. Often, breast reconstruction represents the final step in breast cancer treatment and allows women to feel as if they have come full circle. BRA Day will help women understand the positive impact reconstruction surgery can have.
